DIGITAL DIVIDE
The need of the smartphone detox
Photo Source: Flickr “Walking on cell phone”
The smartphone has become a tool that has consumed our minds and time.
“There are 12 billion devices connected to the internet. In the next decade, there will
be 50 billion.” (1)
“We have been seduced by distraction.” (1)
“According to the Rogers phone company Innovation Report, 51% of smartphone
users sleep beside their phone at night, and 82% of people bring their phone to the
bathroom.” (2)
“Within the last two years, there has been a 38% increase resulting in 68% of
smartphone ownership in Canada for 2015 and 76% in 2016.” (3)
“26% of all motor vehicle accidents, involve phone use.” (4)
“We live in a time of
multicommunicating,
where no one person
gets personal attention
for long.” (5)
NOMOPHOBIA
“The anxious feeling you get when you misplace your cellphone or your phone battery dies.” (6)
“Sixty-six percent of
all adults suffer
from nomophobia.
Nine percent feel
stressed when their
phones are turned
off.” (7)
“One in five people would rather go without shoes for a week than take a break
from their phone.” (7)
"We live in a technological universe in which we are always communicating.
And yet we have sacrificed conversation for mere connection." (8)
What is the solution?
A Digital Detox
“A digital detox is switching off all mobiles, smartphones, tablets, laptops, and
computers for a period 24 hours to 72 hours or more.” (9)
“Track the time you spend
online. Pay attention to your
internet and phone habits. If
you notice yourself spending
unintended time using one or
the other, it may be a
symptom of internet
addiction.” (10)
Do not bring your phone
to bed. Fifty-one percent
of smartphone users, sleep
beside their phone.
The blue light from your
phone delays you from
falling asleep. (10)
Try a technology fast
every month. Going a
day or more without a
computer, tablet or
phone, will help you feel
liberated. (11)
“Balance screen time
and in-person time each
week. For every hour
you invest in front of a
screen, you invest in
human contact.” (11)
"Monotask. Reconnect and
practice how you listen to
people. Put down anything
that’s in your hands and
turn all your attentional
channels to the person who
is talking. Monotasking can
also be as simple as having
a conversation.” (12)
As the smartphone may be a useful tool to use in our everyday lives. It is equally
important to remind ourselves to take a break from the device and enjoy our lives.
