12. Merge pdf files using Adobe Acrobat Pro
Brainstorming
1. Sketch of a variety of lines
notating what they express.
Next-- Choose an adjective that
resonates with you.
Examples: Strong, happy, ugly,
sad, brave, etc.

4. In all, you might have 9 or more
sketches (3 or more for each
concept. Dig deep!)

(set up)

2. Sketch out at least three ways
to express your adjective,
incorporating the word itself into
your drawing.

3. Find several ways to express
each idea. Really tap into your
creativity and find fun ways to
express your ideas.

For instance, for the word
"strong" ---- I might:
(#1) sketch a picture of a strong
person,
(#2) another of a strong smelling
cheese, or even a picture of
(#3) a heart (or a loving couple).

For example: The strong person
idea (#1) might be a close-up
picture of a man flexing biceps (with
the word STRONG tattooed on his
muscles), another might be a
woman hurdling over the word
STRONG, and finally, maybe a man
with a devil on one shoulder and an
angel on the other.

5. Create a folder on your desktop
called Digital Drawing.

6. Scan your sketches (they can all
be on the same page of your
sketchbook), or if you don't have a
scanner, take a picture of them and
save the picture to your Digital
Drawing folder.

3
Digital Development
1. Choose one or more of your
sketches to use as your guide for
your Scribbler drawing (it's up to
you).

2. Open Scribbler and create
Don't worry about your rendering.
Scribbler isn't precise. You might
even decide to add things to your
Scribbler drawing that weren't in
your original sketch.

(set up)

3. Hit DONE DRAWING button to
move to next step. OPEN Scribbler
settings to adjust color, line
thickness, etc.
START Scribbler! Pay attention, you
will be hitting the pause button
several times in the process.

4. Hit the PAUSE key at several
stages of the development of your
art before you settle on a final
version.

5. Each time you hit PAUSE, take a
screen capture of your progress:
(Command/Shift + 4 until you see a
target with cross hairs. Position
crosshairs on upper left corner of
drawing and drag down and to the
right to capture entire box.
NOTE: The size of the art is 7.5”
square. (important to know for later.)

6. Capture at least 3 or 4 stages of
your progress, using instructions in
Step 5, before deciding on the final
art.
Place images in your Digital
Drawing folder and name them.

Set up pages in InDesign
1. Open InDesign. When the
interface first opens,
UNCHECK the box that says
FACING PAGES. You only
want single pages.
Use Vertical page orientation
so that your page is
8-1/2” wide x 11" tall.

2. Page 1: When the page opens:
On the top of your page, using your
text tool, create a type box and type
in the word Brainstorming
Double-click the heading to highlight
it, and change the typeface to
whatever you like, and make it
anywhere from 18 to 36 points in
size (up to you)..

4. Click and HOLD on your page,
but DON'T let go!

3. Deselect the type box
Go get your images! FILE >
PLACE > [locate your jpegs] >
OPEN.
Once you hit the OPEN button, you
will see a paintbrush holding a small
ghost of your image.
Don't place it yet. See step 4.

5. Next, you'll make a copy of this
page to create the Digital
Development page.
Open the PAGE palette (on right
side of screen).
Create a copy of your
BRAINSTORMING page by
dragging the icon of page 1 onto the
page icon at the bottom of palette.
5
Set up pages in InDesign:
1. Double-click page 2 in PAGE
palette to make sure you are on
the right page.
Page 2: Digital Development
page - On the live page, using
your text tool from your
TOOLBOX (on left), highlight the
heading, (triple-click,) and type
over it with the words Digital

2. Using your black arrow, select all
images and hit DELETE.
Now you'll include your Scribbler
development jpegs. Using the same

Development.

5. Go back to your blank page
(pg 3).

3. Page 3: Now, you'll create the
Design Narrative page using
another technique that will
automatically position your headline
in the right place.
Go to PAGES palette and create a
new blank page.

Drag each loaded image into a box
shape.

4. You'll need to copy the headline
from page 2 to use on page 3.

copy the heading.

6. Next you will add your Design
Narrative text underneath your
heading.

6
Set up pages in InDesign:
1. Place cursor at the end of the
heading line and hit RETURN.

2. Write a few short paragraphs
describing your creative process.

When you are on your new empty
line, go to CHARACTER palette and
select a typeface to use for your
body copy.

For instance, what inspired you?
What obstacles did you face? What
was your aha moment when you
decided upon a concept? What
technical challenges did you have?

Use 11 or 12 point font.

3. Working with type: Keep your
paragraphs short for easy reading
(3-5 lines per paragraph).
If your body copy (the text) is too
close to your headline, you can add
space by selecting the headline and
putting space under it. How? See
next step.

You can write about anything
related to your process. These are
just ideas to help you get started

4. Adding space:

5. Benchmark

Triple-click your headline to select.

You now have 3 pages completed in
InDesign! They are all 8-1/2 x 11"

Go to PARAGRAPH palette. On the
right side, in the second section,
you'll see a little text icon with the
bottom line highlighted in gray. Click
the UP ARROW next to icon until
the space under your headline
opens up to your liking.

Working with text

1. Brainstorming
2. Digital Development
3. Design Narrative

6. Next you will add pages for your
Final Scribbler art and reduce the
pages to match the size of the
artwork.
You will not use headings on your
final Scribbler art pages.

7
Adding a Scribbler final drawing
& Resizing page
1. Now you are going to add your
final Scribbler final drawings.
This time, the pages won't need
headings. To indicate finals, we
are going to change the page
sizes of the next few pages so
that your final artwork completely
fills them up.

4. Located above your tool bar at
the top horizontal section, go to the
input boxes that say X and Y. These
coordinates indicate the height and
width of your page.
In the X box, type in 7.5"
In the Y box, type in 7.5"

2. Create a new page to put your
first drawing. Remember, no
heading is needed.

3. Reduce page size: Using the
black arrow from your toolbox, click
anywhere on your blank page.

Go to PAGE palette.

Located beneath the white arrow of
your toolbox, select the PAGE ICON
(3rd icon down).

Click on the page icon on bottom of
palette to create a blank page.
(page 4)

---- You now have a square
shaped page that matches the
size of your Scribbler rendering.

You will notice that your page
appears to have handles all around
it. Don't touch them! Instead...(see
next step.)

5. Place your final Scribbler art on
page using the same PLACE
technique you used earlier: FILE >
PLACE> [locate one of your final
Scribbler jpegs] > OPEN.
Holding the mouse down on the left
corner of the square page, drag
your image box out to the edges of
your page and let go to fill up entire
7.5” square page.

8
Adding more final Scribbler art
1. Adding another 7.5” page
Go to your PAGES palette on
right side of your screen (not the
page tool in toolbox).
From the PAGES palette, drag
your new square page down to
the page icon on bottom of
palette to duplicate page.

2. Replacing art on Duplicate
page
Don't delete the art on duplicate
page---instead----select it with the
BLACK ARROW from your toolbox.

NOTE:
To include all of your final
Scribbler drawings, repeat steps
1 and 2 as many times as you
need.

FILE > PLACE > [select another
final Scribbler file] ---- this will
replace the duplicate art with the
newly selected art.

In the next section, you will package up all your files into one location.
The package will contain your InDesign file plus all images and fonts used.

Packaging & Creating PDF
Package project

Create a PDF from Indesign file

FILE > PACKAGE

FILE > EXPORT, format PDF
(follow prompts).

Follow prompts to save.
Don't worry about the warning at
the end. It talks about the
copyright on the typeface you are
saving. Ignore it.
This process will save a project
folder for you.
(If you are curious about font
copyright, click the link below.)

3. Reminder: Prepare Evaluation
forms
If you haven't done this already,
right-click on link located on
assignment page and download
evaluation forms.
NOTE: If the forms pop up on your
screen in PREVIEW, close it, then
open in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Complete the forms in Acrobat Pro
and save your file to your Digital
Drawing folder.
Quit Acrobat Pro.
Next you will be merging your pdf
files into one. There are a few ways
to do this, but I am showing you the
easiest way. (See next slide)
