Microsoft Business Intelligence Provided Sophisticated Reporting Tools
In the direct mail and fulfillment industry, data management is critical to business success. The ability to leverage knowledge
management and data mining provides the benefit of making informed business decisions, which in turn provides better insight for
assessing risk and facilitates healthy financial gains through business growth opportunities. The client had an existing order processing
system using the Business Basic programming language on a UNIX server, which was very inefficient for generating reports. They had
close to 100 key customer accounts for which they needed to generate order-related reports on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. In
order to do this with the current process, a Business Basic programmer was required to custom code and email the reports, leading to
delays as sometimes this process took days. The client wanted an automated and sophisticated system that would extract the source
data and load it to the Relational Database Management System, where these critical reports could be utilized.

Rapid Access to Business Information Ensured Better Decision Making
YASH Technologies was selected as the strategic partner to analyze the client’s environment and processes, recommend the best
options and provide implementation support. Understanding the client’s plans for growth, YASH recommended and deployed Microsoft
SQL Server 2008 suite of products, for its ability to create enterprise-level extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) applications,
and to integrate and analyze data from heterogeneous information sources such as the operational systems used by the client.
The data warehouse consolidated operational information in one location and provided a rich set of business intelligence tools that
employees could easily access. To help create the data warehouse, SQL Server 2008 Integration Services was implemented to deliver
significant ETL performance improvement for the enterprise. It provided new ways to glean business intelligence from information by
offering complete data integration, cleansing, movement, and shaping. YASH analyzed business procedures with the company’s system
to maximize the efficiency and usability of the new data warehouse.
In addition, the client used SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services to provide a set of predefined reports that gave management a fast,
high-level view of the company’s performance. Client-specific charts would compare the current day’s, week’s, or quarter’s revenue
numbers with the same period from the previous year. Other reports would chart the progress of key customer accounts, and provide
different groups of users with easy access to well-defined and easy-to-understand overviews in one report. Custom key performance
indicators (KPI) metrics and reports were created based on the end user role with a trigger mechanism to send email alerts, whenever
threshold limits were crossed. Moreover, a self-service capability was enabled for the end users from key customer accounts, where
they could create ad-hoc reports. YASH also used third-party Dundas Data Visualization tools along with SQL Server 2008 Analysis
Services to deliver the information in the form of user-friendly dashboards for senior executives in the organization.

Enhanced Reporting and Analysis Led to Increased Business Agility
An adaptive environment was created because of the rapid extraction and loading of data. The client no longer had to wait for a
programmer to write a code to deliver the reports that helped them make business decisions. The solution empowered employees, as
analytical data was now readily available and understandable, to act in ways that improved performance and supported the overall
business strategy.
With a well-structured data warehouse system in place, the client was able to segment their customers and modify their service
offering and level of service to specific customers, resulting in improved customer satisfaction and retention, and increased
market share.
