This document summarizes some of the environmental and safety issues associated with mining. It discusses how mining can modify habitats and landscapes, contaminate surface and groundwater, and produce high levels of residues. It also describes some of the health risks miners face from dust, heat, poor air quality, and water inundation. Major mining disasters that have occurred include explosions, collapses, and landslides which have caused many deaths over the years. One significant ecological disaster discussed was the 1998 toxic spill from a pyrite mine in Spain that contaminated local beaches and ecosystems.
