Disruption by Information Technology
Mr. Ijaz Haider Malik weboriez@hotmail.com +923335690567
Abstract
In last five years, disruption introduced by Information Technology, is radical. Number of
innovations in aforementioned period were more than innovations introduced in any century.
Rotmans said, “This is not an era of change, but a change of era”. Customers are obsessed
with innovations, and companies are forced to bring products accordingly. Markets shrunk
due to globalization and further making things harder for companies to cope up.
Myth of Lion, as a successful predator is busted. Biologist and naturalists proved that in
nature, scavengers are more successful than hunters. Most of disruptors used the scavengers’
approach to make profits. Like Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using
telecom operators’ network without sharing their revenue. Similarly, Airbnb serving
customers without owning a single hotel. Successful disruptors have common business
model: unique innovative idea backed up by the latest Information Technology and using
assets of other businesses without sharing their revenue.
Introduction
Companies are investing in new minds to introduce ground breaking ideas using IT
technology as a base. Companies that do not own Telecom backbone can offer free
international calls (Skype, WhatsApp),
companies (Airbnb, Hotelbookings.com) not
owning single hotel, beaten top hotels in revenue,
companies (Alibaba, Amazon) do not have single
outlet, outclass biggest world store chains, and
companies (Netflix, IFlix) not owning single
cinema, making more revenue than film makers
and cinema chains. Social media (Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat) changed people’s
behaviors, interactions and ways of socializing.
Companies that do not want to espouse changes won’t survive in this fast-paced technology
race. Nokia business case is the best example. Nokia was leader in cell phone manufacturing
but had been pushed out of competition by competitors. According to Nokia’s top
management1, they did not do anything wrong. But, everyone knows that they have failed to
adopt the change and fail to bring innovation at the right time.
It is paradigm shift that people leaving conventional ways of running businesses and adopting
new ways where offices spaces are virtual, human resources are spread across the world, and
1 https://www.newyorker.com/business/currency/where-nokia-went-wrong
using assets of other companies without sharing the revenue. And, all this could only be
possible with apt Information Technology use.
IT and Future
IBM Watson2: enabled human to break first sphere of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and
entered into second sphere. It is IT tool which enables Watson to respond to any question
posed to it in natural language. Watson beaten Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings who were
former winners of popular Jeopardy quiz show. Watson is currently used as “Virtual Agents”
and it is expected that in coming years, it would replace humans in contact centers. Also,
Watson would be used for auto driven cars and helping doctors in surgeries.
Tesla Auto Pilot Cars: are successfully operating in many countries. Special AI Software is
developed to support Auto Pilot driving. Dubai and few other countries are planning for 2025
to have self-driven taxis for commuters.
Sophia Robot: is the first AI humanoid developed in Hong Kong which has Saudi Arabian
nationality. It is also equipped with IT AI Software. Sophia is the first robot which can show
facial expression and hand gestures according to its environment, like happy face expression
when finds something amusing. It is also predicted by few gurus that robots will take over
the jobs in next 20 years.
Augmented reality: Now computer games are backed up by augmented reality. Game
players can play their games with their own eco system in the background.
Additive manufacturing (3D Printing): is control by IT software to print 3D objects. With
the help of additive manufacturing, human limbs can be printed. In future, people who lost
their limbs, shall get customized artificial limbs within minutes with the help of additive
manufacturing.
Conclusions:
Thanks to Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud computing and other IT advancement,
world is transforming with the pace of light.
