What is Social Science?
Social Sciences are the
group of academic
disciplines dedicated to
examining society. This
branch of social science
studies how people interact
with each other, behave,
develop as a culture, and
What is Social Science?
The Social Science is
those discipline that
uses research and
analysis to examine
human behavior.
Understanding the
History of Social
Sciences
History
The origin of social sciences
can be traced back to Ancient Greeks.
The lives they led, and their early studies into
human nature, the state and mortality, helped
to shaped Western civilization.
Social Sciences as an academic
field of study developed out of the Age of
Enlighten (Age of Reason), which flourished
through much of the 18th
century in the Europe.
History
Individuals began to make more
disciplined approach to quantify
their observations of society, and
over time, similar aspects of
society, such as linguistics and
psychology, where separated into
unique fields of study.
History
Adam Smith, Voltare, Jean
Jacques Rousseau, Denis
Diderot, Immanuel Kant, David
Hume were among the big
intellectuals at the time who laid
the foundations for the study of
social sciences in the Western
World.
Understanding Social
Sciences
Social Sciences help to
explain how society works,
exploring everything from
the triggers of economic
growth and causes of
unemployment to what
makes people happy.
Understanding Social
Sciences
This information is vital and
can be used for many
purposes. Among other
things, it helps to shape
corporate strategies and
government policies.
Understanding Social
Sciences
Social Science as a field of
study is separate from the
natural Sciences, which
cover topics such as physics,
biology and chemistry.
Understanding Social
Sciences
This academic disciplines
rely more heavily on
interpretations and
qualitative research
methodologies.
What is
Natural
Science?
Natural Science
 Natural science is a branch of
science concerned with the
description, prediction, and
understanding of natural
phenomena, based on empirical
evidence from observation and
experimentation.
Natural Science
 It is a branch of science that
seeks to elucidate he rules that
govern the natural world by
applying an empirical and scientific
method to the study of the
universe.
Natural Science
 The term natural science is used to distinguish it
from the social sciences, which apply the scientific
method to study human behavior and social
patterns; the humanities, which use a critical, or
analytical approach to the study of human
conditions. “Nature” conjures an image of random
and unstructured forces that shape a given area.
These forces and events. While unrestrained and
ever dynamic, usually follow a general pattern, law.
 Seeks to understand
“human reactions to
events and the
meanings humans
impose on experience
as a function of culture,
historical era, and life
history.”
What is
humanity?
 The humanities help
us understand others
through their
languages, histories
and cultures. They
foster social justice and
What is
humanity?
 The humanities teach
empathy. They teach us to deal
critically and logically with
subjective, complex, imperfect
information. And they teach us
to weigh evidence skeptically
and consider more than one
side of every question.
What is
humanity?
 Humanities students build
skills in writing and critical
reading. The humanities
encourage us to think
creatively. They teach us to
reason about being human and
to ask questions about our
world.
Humanity
 The humanities develop
informed and critical
citizens. Without the
humanities, democracy
could not flourish.
Humanities are the stories,
the ideas, and the words
that help us make sense of
Humanity
Social Sciences Natural Sciences Humanities
Functions To analyze, explain,
and possibly predict
human behavior (as
groups and/or
individuals)
To understand, explain,
and predict the world
we live in using scientific
methods and distinctive
methods of inquiry
To better appreciate the
meaning and purpose of the
human experience- both
broadly in the nature of the
human condition, as well as
within each unique individual
Purpose/End
Goal
Generation of new
knowledge (factual
information)
Discovery of laws that
rule the world (with
focus on the natural
world)
Generation of wisdom, to better
explore and address the “big
questions” and meet the
challenges in the human
condition
Methodology Application of an
empirical, rational and
objective methodology
(use of validity and
reliability tests) to
present the facts.
Application of natural
science methods. i.e.,
systematic observation,
measurement and
experiment
Application of an interpretative
methodology (use of text
analysis, reflective thinking, and
acknowledgement of audience)
to render something
meaningful for others
Activity 1.1
Directions: Read and analyze the following statements. Write TRUE if
the statement is correct and write FALSE if it is incorrect.
1. Social Sciences are the group of academic disciplines dedicated to
examining people.
2. The origins of social sciences can be traced back to Ancient Greeks.
3. Both humanities and social sciences study human beings.
4. Social science is the same from natural science and humanities
because the primary interest lies in predicting and explaining human
behavior.
5. Both humanities and social sciences study human beings.
6. Science believes that “truth” has always been existing and it only needs to
be discovered and revealed through a well-defined system of
understanding.
7. It is important in social science since it is an instrument by which issues and
problems are examined and recommendations from policy making are
offered depending on the findings of study conducted.
8. Social sciences help to explain how society works, exploring everything from
the triggers of economic growth and causes of unemployment to what
makes people happy.
9. Social sciences as the field of study is also from the natural sciences, which
cover topics such as physics, biology and chemistry.
10. The history of social sciences has origin in the common stock of western
philosophy.
I. Directions: Analyze the following questions
concisely.
1. Compare and contrast the social sciences, natural
sciences and humanities in terms of functions,
purpose or end goal and methodology.
2. Do you agree that the study of society is more
philosophical in nature than scientific? Defend your
answer.
II. Visit YouTube and watch the five-minute video “An
Animated Introduction to Social Science (2011)”. Write
one-page analysis sharing your own thoughts about
social science. You may refer to the weblink below:
• https:/ /www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSIdaTSG2Gg
Assignment:
Before we proceed for the discussion tomorrow,
what comes into your mind when you hear the
word
“SOCIAL SCIENCES”? Write your answers in your
notebook, using the concept map below.
Directions:
Write down 10 problems that you think needed attention in your
society. In the opposite column, write the things that you can do
to help solve these problems. Do this on a separate sheet of paper.
Examples are provided below.
Problems I See Help I Can Give
1. Lack of education Be an active participant to society using
strategic ways in accessing educational
tools, modules and equipment.
