SSP 1: SOCIAL SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY
OBJECTIVES Identify different major
branches of science
1.
Discuss Social Science as science
2.
Understand the meaning of
Social Science and its relevance
3.
Different Applied, Pure and
Social Sciences.
4.
Enumerate and discuss
different steps of scientific
investigation

APPLIED
SOCIAL
PURE
refers to using scientific
knowledge for practical
applications, such as a new
invention based on an
existing tool.
is the study of people: as individuals,
communities and societies; their
behaviours and interactions with each
other and with their built, technological and
natural environments.
is a science that derives theories and

PURESCIENCE
Pure Science is a science that derives theories and
predictions. Pure Science can also known as natural
Science, basic science or fundamental science.
Pure sciences deals with the study of natural phenomena
through observation, experimentation and use of scientific
methods.
Pure Science is research which doesn’t consider how these
theories can be applied but is used to answer questions or
phenomena. Pure Sciences usually take place in a laboratory
setting.
Chemistry
Biology
Physics
STEPS OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD
EXAMPLES
APPLIEDSCIENCE
Applied Sciences is the actual application of these theories
and predictions to practical problems such as in Engineering
or Technology. These are most commonly applied in
Research & Development, otherwise known as simply R&D.
Applied Sciences usually take place outside of a laboratory.
Studying applied science is beneficial as the discoveries
made may improve our daily lives, including health care and
technology. If you want to study one of the applied sciences,
you can start by learning what your options are.

SOCIALSCIENCE
Social science is a study of human behavior, relationship
with other human in terms of emotions, psychologic, the
impact of belief to environment based on scientific
research.
Social Science is a branch of science that deals with the
institutions and functioning of human society and with the
interpersonal relationships of individuals as members of
society.

RESEARCHASSIGNMENT
A. Make an observation in real word. What
triggers you’re curiosity? You may formulate
you’re own question, then answer it using the
steps of scientific method. Present your
answers by indicating what steps of scientific
method did you apply.
PHILOSOPHY
INTRODUCTION
by Christine Camingan
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Explain the meaning of
Philosophy and its related
branches and importance in
the society.
ORIGIN OF PHILOSOPHY
Socrates, a Greek philosopher
used the term philosophie as an
equivalent to the search of
wisdom. Also, the term wisdom is
used as a general term for
describing the intellectual
probing of any idea.
ORIGIN OF PHILOSOPHY
The term “philosophy” is taken
from the Greek word ‘phylos’’
meaning “to love” or “to
befriend” and ‘sophie’ meaning
“wisdom”. Thus philosophy means
“love of wisdom”.
PHILIA = LOVE
SOFIA = WISDOM
The study of the nature and meaning of the universe and of human life. -
(Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary)
Truth of reason (Analytical propositions). - (Immanuel Kant)
Philosophy is a systematic and comprehensive study of truth about life,
about the universe, and everything including events, relationship and
experience.
Philosophy is a process of analysis, criticism, interpretation and
speculation.
DEFINITION OF PHILOSOPHY
GOALS OF PHILOSOPHY
Wisdom is the main goal of
philosophy.
Discovering the nature of truth
and the nature of knowledge.
It searches for what is basic
value and importance in life.
Examining the relationship
between individuals and the
society as well as humanity and
nature.
SCOPE OF PHILOSOPHY
Nature of the Universe
Standard of justice and conduct
of life
Validity of knowledge
Concrete application of reason
Criteria of beauty
Relationship between languages
and thought
BRANCHES OF PHILOSOPHY
IMPORTANCE OF PHILOSOPHY
People can clarify what they are believing.
1.
We can be stimulated to think of ultimate question.
2.
Philosophy promises us better understanding of ourselves.
3.
The study of philosophy enables us to think carefully and clearly
about important issues.
4.
Studying philosophy sharpens our analytical abilities, enabling to
identify and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses in any position.
5.
It hones your ability to construct and articulate cogent arguments
of your own.
6.
RESEARCHASSIGNMENT
B. How can you apply the four main
branches of philosophy in your own
chosen field? (explain each)
