This document defines and provides examples of different types of infinitives in English:
- An infinitive is the basic form of a verb with or without "to", such as "do" and "to do". There are three types of infinitives: bare infinitive without "to", full infinitive with "to", and cleft infinitive which splits the infinitive with an adverb.
- Bare infinitives are used after auxiliary verbs and verbs of perception. Full infinitives are used as subjects, objects, and after transitive verbs. Cleft infinitives emphasize the subject. Infinitive phrases can function as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs.
