Experiment 1
body mass index
2
Measurement of the body weight
(in Kg)
Measurement of the body height
(in meters)
• The person stands up
with his back touching a
portable or wall-
mounted stadiometer
with a movable head
piece
Calculation of the body mass index
BMI=
weight (in kg)/ height squared (in meters)
Kg/m2
Interpretation of the value of body
mass index (BMI)
• Below 18.5 , the person is underweight.
• Between 18.5 and 24.9, the person has a
normal (healthy) body weight.
• Between 25 and 29.9, the person is
overweight.
• ≥ 30, the person is obese.
7
8
BMI pitfalls
• Muscular athletes may have a high BMI
though they are not obese
• Edema
9
Experiment 2
waist/hip circumference
10
Measurement of the waist
circumference
• Waist circumference
should be measured:
• 1- at the end of expiration,
• 2- over minimal clothing
• 3- at a level midway
between the lower rib
margin and the iliac crest,
• 4- the tape all around the
body in horizontal position.
12
13
Measurement of the hip circumference
• The hip circumference is taken:
• 1- over minimal clothing,
• 2- at the level of the greatest
protrusion of the gluteal (buttock)
muscles.
• 3- The subject stands erect , with his
body weight evenly distributed on
both feet , and legs slightly parted
(gluteal muscles should not be
tense).
• 4- The measuring tape should be
flat, horizontal, not too tight or too
loose.
Interpretation of the waist/hip
circumference
Higher ratios mean……
• that the person has
abdominal obesity
(central obesity), which
is associated with
increased incidence of
cardiovascular diseases
and diabetes mellitus.
17
Experiment 3
Measurement of the body fat
(fatmeter) (Inbody)
18
Why do we measure the body fat % ?
• Because the BMI is not most accurate way to
determine obesity
19
The fatmeter
• Measures the amounts
of body fat, muscles
and water.
• You enter information
about your weight,
height, age and sex.
• You stand on the
apparatus, bare foot,
with your hands holding
the 2 handles.
Principle of function: Bioempedence
• The fat meter passes a small,
harmless, electric current
through the body and measures
the resistance to its passage
(mainly due to presence of
adipose tissue).
• The fatmeter measures
the person's body fat
percentage.
• Also it measures body
muscle mass and body
composition of water
and minerals
25
Is all the fat in our body harmful ?
• No, fat enters in the composition of some
essential constituents , protects organs
against mechanical trauma.
• But, excess storage of fat leads to multiple
diseases.
• The fatmeter measures
the person's body fat
percentage.
• Also it measures body
muscle mass and body
composition of water
and minerals

tabel 1 (body composition analysis):
1- comment on the weight
2- comment on the % of TBW, protein, fat, minreals from normal values u studied
in module 3
..........................................
tabel 2 (muscle fat analysis):
normally the connection between the 3 points of the three parameters must give
(D shape), but if u connect them here they will give (C shape) which is abnormal
