BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)
WHAT IS BMI?
BMI is a way of checking that a person is a healthy
weight for their height.
 For your height and weight there will be a healthy
range which you should fit into, this range is to
account for the fact people have different builds and
sizes.
 Typically the average healthy BMI range for
individuals is between 19 and 24.

HOW TO CALCULATE BMI…
To calculate your BMI: Divide your weight in
kilograms (kg) by your height in metres (m)
 Then divide the answer by your height again to get
your BMI.


-

-

The formula is as shown below:
Mass(kg)/Height(m)²
In your spreadsheet you can calculate your BMI
applying this formula to your cells…
YOUR FORMULA…
If you enter your weight in (KG) in cell A1
 You enter your height in meters in B1
 Put this formula in C1...
=A1/B1^2
This calculates the BMI.
 Can you see how this works?


Experiment with the formulas and the values to see
how the BMI result changes.
Make sure your formula is unique to the cells where
you have placed your values, not, just a copy of the
formula above.


Have a go yourselves!

In groups, you can each measure your height using
the tape measures and your weight using the
weighing scales.
*Make sure you use equipment in the correct unit of
measurement, if not your teacher will explain to you
how to convert it*
Anyone who has not recorded their results share
these with a classmate.
Now, using your results and the formulas, calculate
your BMI!
EXTENSION


When you have managed to calculate your own BMI,
calculate the results of the rest of your class’ BMI and
keep these all in your spreadsheet.



You will have chance to share your results and check
them at the end of the lesson.



Good luck!
