DRAFTING
The systematic representation
and dimensional specification
and mechanical and
architectural structure.
The creation of artistic pictures
or diagrams.
Drawing
 Is

learning the skill to train our hands in
order to develop our abilities and interests
to draw
QUALIFYING SKILLS THAT ANY DRAWER
MUST POSSESS:
 He

must have the ability to interpret a
working drawing.
 He must know how to read symbols.
 He must understand the alphabet of lines
and drawing specifications.
 He must have the ability to draw different
styles of letters.
 He should know how to draw and apply
different shades in coloring.
Drawing
Instruments, Tools
and Materials
A. Tools, Instruments and
Equipment
1. Triangles – they are
usually made of
transparent plastic
which are used for
drawing oblique and
vertical lines.
2. Triangular Scales
-English Scales
-Metric Scales
-they are made of
wood, plastic or
metal, which are use
for drawing an
object on a paper
by scaling the sizes.
3. Drawing Board
A

portable board
made of softwood,
wherein a drawing
paper is fastened
on top.
 Their working edge
should be perfectly
straight and their
surface is trim and
smooth.
4. Protractor




Is used for measuring
and laying out arcs
and circles as well as
angles that cannot
be measured with
either the 45°or the
30° x 60° triangles.
It is half-circle
shaped instrument,
made of transparent
plastic used for
guiding a draftsman
in drawing different
angles.
5. Compasses






Is used for drawing
arcs and circles. It is
made of the lower
portion of the pencil
leg.
It is removable and
to e replaced when
needed.
The pen and the
needle point leg are
held together by a
handle.
6. T-square






Is an instrument used
for drawing
horizontal lines.
It is also used to
support the triangle
for drawing vertical
or inclined line
Are made of wood,
plastic or metal.
Two Main Parts of T-square
 The

head
 The blade

 Three

kinds of Tsquare
-fixed heads
-removable head
-adjustable head
7. Drawing Set
 It

is a kit which
consists of a
compass, divider,
ruling pen,
compass pen and
pencil leads.
 It is used for
drawing arcs and
circles and inking
them.
8. French Curve
 It

is an instrument
which is usually
made of
transparent plastic
and used for
drawing irregular
curves like an
ellipse.
9. Ruler
 It

is made of
wood, plastic or
metal used for
measuring
purposes and for
drawing and for
drawing a straight
line. The edge of
the ruler should be
straight.
Materials
1. Drawing Paper
 It

should have a
smooth surface
when erasures are
made.
2. Tapes and Tacks
 There

are varieties
of tapes and tacks
available in the
store.
 They are used for
fastening the
drawing paper on
the drawing board.
3. Colors and water colors
 They

are coloring
materials made of
pigment, dyes, and
others.
 they are used for
coloring drawings.
Proper Care of Drafting and
other Materials

Pencils should be sharpened whenever they
show signs of dullness.
Never use the edge of T-square and triangles
to cut paper along its working edge. A slight
nick at the edge will ruin the T-square.
Wipe off the surface and edges of your Tsquare and triangles before and after using
them.
Avoid dropping your compass, divider and
technical pens.
Provide a place to hang individually your Tsquares, triangles, protractors and French
curves after using them.
 Provide

a separate container for drawing
pencils, compasses, dividers, rolling pens
and technical pens.
 Wash the nibs of your compass after using
them.
 Dry the compass nibs and needlepoint after
washing. Store them in a dry place. This will
avoid rust formation on the instrument’s
parts.
 Keep tools and equipment in their proper
place after using them.
