1. 2ND ANNUAL SGT BRANDON MAGGART LEGACY RUN/WALK August 11. This four mile course
starts in Powderworks Park, DuPont, at 0830 on August 11th. Wear Blue: Run to Remember is
a running community that serves as a living memorial to Fallen Warriors. Wear a blue shirt,
or order a Wear Blue shirt customized with SGT Maggart’s information, and help us
celebrate his life, and show our support for his Family, wife Teresa, and young son Blake. 5-5

7. TRIPLE THREAT TRIATHLON SERIES the 20th anniversary JBLM Triple Threat Triathlon Series, Aug. 18. Swim, bike and

16. JBLM INVITED TO INITIAL TACOMA “TUNNEL TO TOWERS” RUN JBLM Airmen and Soldiers and their Families are invited
to Tacoma’s first running of the Stephen Siller TUNNEL TO TOWERS RUN Sept. 15. Cities across the country have
mirrored an annual New York City run held by Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the final heroic footsteps of FDNY
Firefighter Stephen Siller, and all of the first responders and service members who sacrificed their lives on 9/11. This
will be the first Tunnel To Towers Run in Tacoma. It will start and finish at the site of the Retired Fireboat along Ruston
Way on the Tacoma Waterfront, also the location of the Tacoma Firefighters Memorial. An antique fire engine will lead
the runners from the starting line with lights and sirens. Tunnel To Towers is partnering with Gary Sinise Foundation and

17. JENSEN FAMILY HEALTH AND FITNESS CENTER WILL CHARGE CHILD CARE HOURLY RATE- Jensen FHFC will offer a fully
functioning child care center with child development professionals and age appropriate learning activities. The cost for
child care at Jensen will be $4 an hour per child. Hourly care fees are set at Department of Defense level. Parents will be
able to make child care reservations and use their deployment benefits at Jensen. (The opening of Jensen Family
Health and Fitness Center has been delayed until September ) Child care at Wilson Gym will remain free, until Jensen’s
child care center is open.

21. MILITARY FAMILIES TO GET FREE NATIONAL PARKS PASS. Active-duty military personnel and their dependents will be
able to enter every national park for free as part of an effort to thank service members and their Families for the
sacrifices they make. An annual pass will be made available to members of the military free of charge at all National
parks ($80 value). Military personnel can get the passes at any national park or wildlife refuge that charges an entrance
fee by showing their military ID. Each family member will also be able to obtain their own pass even if the service

member is deployed . The free pass will be made available for activated members of the National Guard and Reserves,
but not for military veterans or retirees.

42. MILITARY AND FAMILY LIFE CONSULTANTS (MFLCs) are licensed professionals who provide situational, problem-solving
consultations anonymously and confidentially. No written records are kept, and it is free to military and Family

43. ARMED FORCES ACTION PLAN (AFAP) is a grass-roots program put in place to improve quality of life. Through JBLM
AFAP, all members of the Army, Air Force, DA civilians and their Family members have a forum to voice concerns to
leadership and make recommendations for change. The JBLM AFAP Conference scheduled for 15-17 Oct 2012 and the
Teen AFAP Conference, scheduled for 13 Oct 12. JBLM offers 4 methods to submit an issue and they are listed below.

63. The JBLM FOSTER PARENT RECRUITMENT PROJECT is a group that has formed on JBLM to address the needs of military
foster children. The group is helping advertise the need for military-connected foster homes, both on the installation

BACK-TO-SCHOOL – With classes just around the corner, it’s important to be proactive
in getting your children ready for school. The following tips can help you avoid
overspending.
1. Begin with a list. Knowing what supplies and school clothes that are needed eliminates the
chance of purchasing something you already own. Not all school supplies or clothes have to
be new. Stick to the school district’s list of required supplies and avoid the fancy stuff. Start looking for
bargains.. Review the advertisements from the Sunday paper for the upcoming deals. If you don’t read the

reduce your spending.

2. Visit the dollar store. You may be surprised by the selection of paper products and other school supplies you
can find there.

3. Set ground rules and dollar limits for clothes shopping. Before you begin inventory your child’s clothes.
Purchasing only the items needed, will help you stay in budget. Choose clothes that will give your children
room to grow. Solid, neutral colors and basic styles are ideal because they allow your child to mix and match.

53. SUICIDE PREVENTION: Soldiers and Family members must understand that suicide is a permanent solution for a
temporary problem. Please understand that help is available for Soldiers as well for Family members to aid in those
situations.

The 5-5 Air Defense Artillery Battalion Leadership and agencies on post are available to help all cases of suicidal
ideations. One case is too many and we are committed to help our Soldiers and Family and stand shoulder to shoulder
with them to help during hard times as necessary. While situations arise that are a burden, remember you do not need
to endure those problems alone. There are many resources available. Please pass the contact information below to
every one for resources available for confidential counseling and help as necessary which are available 24 hours a day.

SCHOOL PHYSICAL DATES
Does your child need a physical to participate in sports this school year, attend summer camp or enter kindergarten?
please call the TRICARE Regional Appointment Line to schedule your child’s physical. The Department of Pediatrics will
be offering several dedicated physical exam dates this summer on Aug. 9, Aug, 28, Sept. 13 and Sept. 25.

Physical exams appointments are offered for TRICARE PRIME patients enrolled to the Department of Pediatrics for
primary care between ages 4-18 years. Forms for physicals, special diet or medications at school or day care will
completed and returned the same day. Parents should ensure that the parent section for all paperwork are completed
prior to arriving and should bring the patient’s immunization records.

To help make these appointments go smoothly, please arrive 15 minutes early for measurements and vital signs and
ensure that your child/adolescent wears comfortable clothing.

Appointments can be scheduled 6-8 weeks in advance by calling the TRICARE Regional Appointment Center at (800) 404-

53. Poison centers are reporting a recent uptick in calls about EXPOSURES OF CHILDREN TO LAUNDRY DETERGENTS
PACKAGED IN SMALL, SINGLE-DOSE PACKETS (PODS). Some young children and toddlers who swallow these small
packets have become very ill and have required hospitalization. Other children have gotten the product in their eyes,
resulting in significant eye irritation. Some children have been exposed when the product burst after putting it into their
mouths. The following are examples of exposures to children who have become ill from concentrated laundry detergent
packets:

 Ten minutes after a 20-month-old swallowed a laundry detergent packet, the child developed
profuse vomiting, wheezing and gasping and then became unresponsive to even painful stimuli.
 A 15-month-old who bit into a pack and swallowed a mouthful had profuse vomiting and, after
arrival at a hospital, had to be put on a ventilator for airway protection.
 A 17-month-old bit into a packet and then rapidly developed drowsiness, vomited, breathed the
product into the lungs, and had to be put on a ventilator.

The rapid onset of significant symptoms is pretty scary. Other laundry detergents cause only mild stomach upset or
even no symptoms at all. Although we aren’t certain what in the product is making the children sick, we urge all
parents and caregivers to make sure laundry detergent pod packs are not accessible to young kids.

Always keep detergents locked up and out of the reach of children. IF YOU THINK A CHILD HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO A
LAUNDRY DETERGENT PACKET, CALL YOUR LOCAL POISON CENTER AT 1-800-222-1222 IMMEDIATELY.

54. CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP: On the 3rd Thursday of each month (August 16), the Dept of Social Work at Madigan
Army Medical Center hosts a support group called "Caring for the Caregiver." The group meets from 2 to 3 p.m. in the
Nursing Tower at Madigan on the Second Floor in the South Waiting Room. The Caregiver Support Group is an open
group designed to provide information & support for anyone who is the caregiver of someone with a chronic medical

55. WALK-IN SERVICES are now available for all service members in the Behavioral Health Clinic at Madigan Army Medical
Center, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The Soldier Readiness Service (SRS) located at Madigan
Annex has permanently closed. Contact Madigan BH Clinic at 968-2700.

56. THE CHILD AND FAMILY ASSISTANCE CENTER (CAFAC) provides behavioral health services for active duty family
members including individuals, couples, families, children and adolescents. CAFAC is located in Bldg 9923 at the
Madigan Annex. Triage hours are daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to assess individual or family's needs and decide the most
appropriate services available for their situation. Contact CAFAC at 968-4843. Services are also available through the
School Behavioral Health (SBH) program for children enrolled in one of the base elementary schools. Contact SBH at

57. THE CHILD & FAMILY ASSISTANCE CENTER offers free, easily accessible behavioral health counseling services to spouses
and children of active duty service members. We help keep families strong by promoting emotional, behavioral, and

63. JENSEN FAMILY HEALTH CENTER REOPENING IS DELAYED UNTIL LATE SEPTEMBER/EARLY OCTOBER. The renovation
project was scheduled to finish early this year. Once a problem with the flooring is solved, there will be a better idea of
an opening date. The $2 million renovation will include new exercise machines, new flooring, a new indoor running
track and a new child care facility.

64. As part of the larger effort to improve livability and functionality at Joint base Lewis McChord (JBLM), the PENDLETON
AVENUE PROJECT will result in better traffic flow, improved parking and facility access. It will also create an attractive
bike and pedestrian-friendly environment with a tree-lined boulevard as well as off-street parking in some areas.
Construction has begun and is scheduled to be completed September 2013. This date may change with requested
