COMMUNITY EVENTS
1. FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER (FRC): The yearly reservation calendar opens for
recurring Family Readiness Group (FRGs) meetings on 6 Aug 12. The calendar will be
open for the dates 1 Oct 12 – 30 Sep 13. The doors open at 0700 and numbers will be
given out. Reservations begin at 0900. One person per unit. For the evenings, the
reservations will consist of TWO groups a night, one group in the kitchen/dining area and
one in the conference room. Please have a couple of days in mind in case your first choice
is not available. No reservations will be made over the phone. If the FRG will not be
meeting monthly, please contact the FRC after 6 Aug 12 for availability. The calendar will
open for all other events and meetings beginning at 0800 on 7 Aug 12 please call (IMLM-

2. McChord Flea Market Saturday, Aug 4, 2012, Flea Market at McChord Field on August 4
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot across the BX/Firestone on Barnes Blvd. Bring

3. U.S. ARMY SOLDIER SHOW August 10. The 2012 U.S. Army Soldier Show is for
Soldiers, about Soldiers and produced by Soldiers. The 90-minute, Broadway-style show
features songs and dance from a variety of musical genres including country, gospel, pop,
rap, hip hop, swing and more. The show finds the most talented people in the Army and
we borrow them from their units, assemble them and then create a show around their

4. ARMED FORCES ACTION PLAN (AFAP) ISSUE SUBMISSIONS: AFAP is a grass-
roots program designed to seek solutions to the concerns of the military community.
Submit your issues or recommendations for improvement – about entitlements, benefits,
...education, housing, medical and more – to the JBLM AFAP Conference scheduled in
October. The deadline to submit issues/recommendations for improvement is Sept. 1. For

5. Recycle more, smaller items To achieve JBLM’s goal of net zero waste by 2020, installation
recycling centers will expand the variety of commodities accepted. For details, check the

space available in our current recycling center and new focus on expanded recycling
opportunities, as of Sunday we began to no longer accept excess or oversized garbage from
on base residents at the JBLM Lewis Main Recycle Center. On-base residents however,
can request curbside bulk pick-up of oversized or excess garbage by emailing
JBLMLeMay@wasteconnections.com or contacting their Equity Residential housing
representative.

6. JBLM invited to initial Tacoma run JBLM Airmen and Soldiers are invited to Tacoma’s
first running of the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Run honoring the sacrifice of first
responders and service members who sacrificed their lives on 9/11. The Sept. 15 run in
Tacoma will start and finish at the site of the retired fireboat along Ruston Way on the

7. Army Ten-Miler information The 28th Annual Army Ten-Miler, produced by the U.S.
Army Military District of Washington, will be held at 8 a.m., Oct. 21, at the Pentagon. It’s
the largest 10-mile race in the world and the only race to start and finish at the Pentagon.

tryouts scheduled Army active-duty personnel timed trials for the JBLM Army Ten-Miler
Team will be held July 28. at Cowan Stadium at JBLM Lewis Main. Selectees will attend

to participate in team training and workouts during normal PT times July through

8. WEAR BLUE: RUN TO REMEMBER RUNNING CLUB- Each Saturday, "Wear Blue:
Run to Remember" meets at Powderworks Park in DuPont, WA, at 9 a.m., to serve as a
living memorial to fallen Service Members. Names of Fallen Warriors from JBLM are
read out loud before each run. You can run/walk a 5K or 10K course each Saturday, and

3. Kayak Hope Island Saturday, Jul 28, 2012, Take a nice paddle to Hope Island and walk
around the beaches and explore tide pools Saturday, July 28. You’ll have the opportunity to

5. Time to get Down and Dirty again Wear your superhero costume and get downright dirty at the

7. Sharpen your edge at sporting clays event Hone your marksmanship at the JBLM 100 Target

9. VOW TO HIRE HEROES ACT offers unemployed military veterans, ages 35-60, an
additional 12 months of full-time Montgomery GI Bill benefits to use toward education and
training for in demand career fields. This program is available to unemployed veterans age 35-

10. MILITARY FAMILIES TO GET FREE NATIONAL PARKS PASS. Active-duty military
personnel and their dependents will be able to enter every national park for free as part of an
effort to thank service members and their Families for the sacrifices they make. An annual pass
will be made available to members of the military free of charge at all National parks ($80
value). Military personnel can get the passes at any national park or wildlife refuge that charges
an entrance fee by showing their military ID. Each family member will also be able to obtain
their own pass even if the service member is deployed . The free pass will be made available
for activated members of the National Guard and Reserves, but not for military veterans or
retirees.
11. FREE ADMISSION TO OVER 1,600 MUSEUMS, NOW TILL LABOR DAY, FOR

1. ACAP: Is sponsoring a Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) lecture regarding
transition at McChord Field. This "Marketing Yourself for a Second Career" lecture is
intended for senior officers and NCOs about to transition but may also be beneficial to all

3. Hiring fair for military spouses The Military Spouse Business Alliance is sponsoring a
hiring fair and career forum exclusively for spouses of the active duty, guard, reserves, and
retired veteran population. All are welcome at the Club at JBLM McChord Field July 24,
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The career forum and hiring fair features employers looking for
military spouses to hire, presentations and workshops to help spouses plan a career in a
highly mobile environment and resume help with computers and printers available to edit
and print resumes on site. Employers and job seekers must pre-register for this free event

4. Earn money at home as a Family Child Care provider Looking for a fun, rewarding job?
Become a Family Child Care provider and make a difference in the lives of military
children and their families. FCC providers can earn up to $2,000 a month, qualify for
subsidies and receive free child care while training and free business resources. The next
orientation will be July 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the FCC office in Building 2013B. Full-day
training classes meet weekdays July 30 through Aug. 6. FCC provides free child care

1. 2013 Military Scholarship Application- Each year the Council of
College and Military Educators offers fifteen $1000 scholarships for
Servicemembers, Military Spouses, and Veterans who are working
towards the completion of higher education degrees. The 2013-14
CCME Scholarship Applications must be submitted online at

1. Madigan EFMP Office Move! The Madigan EFMP has
moved to the 1st Floor of the Nursing Tower (previously
where Child Guidance was located). They occupy rooms

2. EFMP Enrollments/Updates: EFMP enrollment (Air
Force and Army) must be updated every 3 years, or as the

4. 2012 EFMP CAMP “Pirates of American Lake” JBLM: August 17-19: Registration Deadline is
July 31st. Registration packets can be requested by email at
jblmimcomdfmwrefmp@conus.army.mil or picked up at ACS EFMP. Families interested in
Cabin Overnight Stay will be placed in a drawing to be held August 1st. A waiting list will also
be created at this time to ensure full occupancy of the cabins. EFMP DAY CAMP JBLM will
be held August 18th for all EFMP Families and will be a day filled with FREE Pirate themed
activities, including a BBQ, fishing, crafts, pontoon rides, etc.

5. Army Community Service (ACS) Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) will host a
Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, September 13 from 10:30-11:30 am in the ACS Classroom
in Waller Hall (Bldg 2140, Liggett Ave, Lewis-Main). The Town Hall Meeting will provide
Exceptional Families an opportunity to raise global issues impacting Exceptional Family
Members (EFM) on JBLM and Army-wide. The purpose of this forum is to bring to light
issues faced by a number of EFMs; we have staff at ACS EFMP in Waller Hall to assist
Families with personal concerns Monday-Friday from 7:30 am–4:30 pm. The goal is to
compile the issues and determine the appropriate course of action for addressing these issues.
JBLM ACS EFMP has worked hard to forge relationships with agencies on and off post to
partner in improving the quality of life of EFMs and their families. It is your experiences and
voices that will pave the road towards change! We will have a call-in number available to those
Family members who would like to participate but are unable to meet in ACS Classroom

MADIGAN NEWS

1. School Physical Dates: Does your child need a physical to participate in sports this school
year, attend summer camp or enter kindergarten? please call the TRICARE Regional
Appointment Line to schedule your child’s physical. The Department of Pediatrics will be
offering several dedicated physical exam dates this summer on Aug. 9, Aug, 28, Sept. 13 and
Sept. 25. Appointments can be scheduled 6-8 weeks in advance by calling the TRICARE
Regional Appointment Center at (800) 404-4506. We look forwarding to seeing you and your
family this summer!

2. Walk-in services are now available for all service members in the Behavioral Health Clinic at
Madigan Army Medical Center, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The
Soldier Readiness Service (SRS) located at Madigan Annex has permanently closed. Contact
Madigan BH Clinic at 968-2700.
The Child and Family Assistance Center (CAFAC) provides behavioral health services for
active duty family members including individuals, couples, families, children and adolescents.

CAFAC is located in Bldg 9923 at the Madigan Annex. Triage hours are daily from 8 a.m. to
2 p.m. to assess individual or family's needs and decide the most appropriate services available
for their situation. Contact CAFAC at 968-4843. Services are also available through the School
Behavioral Health (SBH) program for children enrolled in one of the base elementary schools.

3. Taking Stress Out of Reintegration- The Defense Department (DoD) is working to assist and
change the nation’s understanding of the invisible wounds of war, according to Defense
Secretary Leon E. Panetta. In doing so, the lead has been taken by the Defense Centers of
Excellence (DCoE) for Psychological and Traumatic Brain Injury. DCoE is out in front on
recognizing psychological problems among Servicemembers and recently began reaching out
to military members and their families through social networking. People often have
unrealistic views of redeployment. Communication is key to understanding what the
Servicemember wants and needs. Include your Servicemember in the planning process so they

4. CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP: On the 3rd Thursday of each month, the Dept of Social
Work at Madigan Army Medical Center hosts a support group called "Caring for the
Caregiver." The group meets from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Nursing Tower at Madigan on the Second
Floor in the South Waiting Room. The Caregiver Support Group is an open group designed
to provide information & support for anyone who is the caregiver of someone with a chronic

6. Requesting Military Service Records- If you are a veteran or a next-of-kin and need
documentation to prove military service, you need to obtain copies of your or your veteran’s
DD Form 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. Military personnel
records are stored with the National Archives and can be requested through the eVetRecs
online system order form. Any requests for military personnel records must be done by the
veteran or the next-of-kin of a deceased veteran. The next-of-kin needs to provide an official
proof of death. Anyone who is not the veteran themselves or the next-of-kin needs to complete
a Standard Form 180 (SF 180). Records are added into the National Archives library 62 years
after the service member's separation from the military. Records with a discharge date 62 years
ago or prior are archived and open to the public. For example, for 2012 records are available
from 1950 and earlier. Records with a discharge date after 1950 are non-archival and are
maintained under the Federal Records Center program. Non-archival records are subject to
access restrictions and need to be accessed through the eVetRecs online system order form.
The 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center damaged or destroyed 16-18 million
Army and Air Force records for military personnel discharged between 1912-1964. Alternate

MOBILE SECURITY – Smartphones aren’t just smart, they are small personal computers.
These devices are small and mobile, which opens a new set of threats to your identity. If you
listen to the news, read the paper or even view the headlines online, you can’t get away from
the recent increase in identity theft. There were over 8.1 million victims of identity theft in
the U.S. in 2010. With people stealing credit and debit card numbers, it’s no wonder we need
to take steps to protect our identity. It can take up to 5,840 hours (the equivalent of working a
full-time job for two years) to correct the damage from identity theft. The average victim
spends 330 hours repairing the damage. Here are a few steps to help you to prevent identity
theft on your Smartphone:

1. Protect your Smartphone. Every Smartphone can be password protected or locked through a pattern or
code. This prevents others from accessing your phone’s information or downloading apps to track you.

2. Install security software. Mobile malware is a rising threat to privacy and security. Mobile malware may
present itself through fake mobile applications, web-browsing, and SMS/text messages. There are
numerous companies which offer anti-virus, malware and security software designed especially for
Smartphones. Make sure to download security software updates. Here is a link to the top five best free

3. Be careful when you install apps on your phone. Apps can do almost anything these days. However, it
is important to install apps from a trusted source. Before downloading any app, consider reviewing the
information the phone app is asking permission to access. The information varies depending on the app’s
requirements. Take the time to read the small print.

4. Install all updates for your phone. Just as you do for your computer, install all updates for your phone
and the apps on your phone.

5. Understand your location (GPS) abilities. Many applications request permission to access location.
Consider turning off the GPS on your phone to protect your location privacy, unless it is necessary to
perform a desired function. If you GPS is enabled, your personal information may be exposed through a
process called “geotagging.” Keep in mind that you have the ability to enable and disable the location

6. Be aware of what you are doing on your phone. The same precautions you would take while on your
home computer apply to your Smartphone. Double check URLs for accuracy, don’t open suspicious
links, and make sure a site is secure before giving any billing or personal information.

7. Limit your activities while using public Wi-Fi. Try not to purchase things or access email while using a
public Wi-Fi zone. Public Wi-Fi hotspots are targeted by hackers since they can give the hacker direct
access to your mobile device. Using your 3G or 4G network provider connection is much more secure
than using a public Wi-Fi connection.

8. Do not “jail-break” or use a “jail-broken” phone. A “jail-broken” phone is a phone that has gone through
a process which opens it operating system to applications which would otherwise not be compatible with
the operating system. Once a phone is “jail-broken” it is vulnerable to anything the user downloads.

9. Make sure your phone has a feature that helps you locate it if it is lost or stolen.

10. Enroll in a backup/wiping program. You can enroll in a program that will back up the information on
your Smartphone to your home computer. Many of these services are also able to “wipe” your phone if
it’s lost or stolen so that no data remains on the device itself.

Tips for your PCS Move
 Have expensive and valuable items (e.g., artwork, collectibles, heirlooms) appraised. The
government does not pay for the appraisals, but consider this part of your investment in the
event of loss or damage.
 Attempt to locate original purchase receipts for your more expensive items and keep them
separate from the rest of your shipment.
 Consider using a video camera or taking close-up pictures to record the condition of your
furniture, working condition of your stereo or television, and the actual appearance of your
expensive and valuable items prior to the HHG pack/pickup dates. This could help in the
event you must file a Loss/Damage Claim.
 Don’t ship small, extremely valuable items such as stocks, bonds, jewelry, coin collections,
and items of great sentimental value such as photo albums. Pack them in your suitcases and
hand-carry them, as well as your purchase receipts, pictures, and appraisals.

CLOSURES, HOURS CHANGES, AND CONSTRUCTION

1. Jensen Fitness Ctr. reopening delay A renovation project scheduled to finish early this year has
been extended. Jensen Family Health and Fitness Center will remain closed until a flooring
issue is resolved. The $2 million renovation will include new exercise machines, new flooring,
a new track surface and a new child care facility.

2. JENSEN FAMILY HEALTH AND FITNESS CENTER WILL CHARGE CHILD CARE
HOURLY RATE- Jensen FHFC will offer a fully functioning child care center with child
development professionals and age appropriate learning activities. The cost for child care at
Jensen will be $4 an hour per child. Hourly care fees are set at Department of Defense level.
Parents will be able to make child care reservations and use their deployment benefits at
Jensen. (The opening of Jensen Family Health and Fitness Center has been delayed until
September ) Child care at Wilson Gym will remain free, until Jensen’s child care center is
open.

Facebook 'photo virus' spreads via email.
Facebook users are at risk from a new virus
which is being spread by emails posing as
photo alerts from the social network. The
emails look exactly like Facebook’s own
messages which are sent to a user’s personal
email accounts when they are tagged in a
photo. However, instead of the links in the
emails leading to the referenced photo, they
redirect the victim of the spam campaign to a
site which tries to infect the person’s

computer with malicious software. A few seconds later the link will redirect the user one more time
to Facebook.com. Many people will not have realised that their computer has been infected – but
can spot the bogus emails as Facebook is misspelt as ‘Faceboook’. “Be wary of emails claiming to
be from Facebook, and saying that you have been tagged in a photograph,” warned Graham Cluley
of the British internet security firm Sophos. “SophosLabs has intercepted a spammed-out email
campaign, designed to infect recipients' computers with malware. If you click on the link in the
email, you are not taken immediately to the real Facebook website. “Instead, your browser is taken
to a website hosting some malicious iFrame script (which takes advantage of the Blackhole exploit
kit, and puts your computer at risk of infection by malware). He added: “Even if you didn't notice
that 'Faceboook' was spelt incorrectly, you could have seen by hovering your mouse over the link
that it wasn't going to take you directly to the genuine Facebook website.” Facebook was
unavailable for comment. (Telegraph.co.uk).
