Year 9 PHSCME Balancing the arguments for alcohol Week 3
2 Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps We have looked at some of the positive, negative, and neutral effects of alcohol. The brilliant thing is you all have your own opinion! Can you write down 5 positive, 5 negative, and 2 neutral effects of alcohol. HINT neutral will be can be bad, but have a good side, or can be good and have a bad side.
One Person's View Nicole Paterson, 12, from Glasgow reports on why she thinks the government should change alcohol laws. "In other countries they are allowed to drink at a much younger age than Britain. We should learn to be sensible I agree with this because I think that by introducing people to alcohol earlier we are showing children that drink is not necessarily bad - that it can be something to learn to socialise with and be sensible with.
One Person's View (Continued)‏ The government say there is too much underage drinking. I think kids do it because it's illegal and children find pleasure in breaking the law. If drinking was not illegal then there would probably be fewer problems and children would not find it as big a deal as before because 'everyone' would be doing it! I think its time for the government to think carefully about drinking laws - it would be for better not for worse!"
What's Good? What's Bad? Look at the style guilines the BBC give to young reporters. What has the writer done well? What has the writer done badly?
Over to You! You need to form groups based on: If you agree the drinking age should be lowered. If you agree on an approach to drinking. THIS IS NOT AS EASY AS IT SEEMS! You may need to compromise!
60 Seconds Ever seen 60 second news on BBC3? You have 60 seconds to get your argument across. Write a script for your SHARED argument. Be ready to present to the group!
How am I marked? GOLD I keep to the 60 seconds, can tick off all the BBC guidelines, all members of the group took part. SILVER We are roughly 60 seconds, can tick off most of the BBC guidelines, and most of the group contributed to the argument. BRONZE Our report was really short or really long. We took little notice of the guidelines, only some people contributed.
