- 2. June 1, 2015 and GHS As of June 1, 2015 chemical manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and end-users are required to identify hazardous substances according to strict GHS labelling guidelines. The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) were adopted to improve safety information and support international trade through standardization of information. There are several areas that need to be considered for GHS- compliant printing: software, labels, printers and supplies.

- 5. 1. Signal Word Indicates relative level of hazard. “Danger” is used for most severe instances, while “Warning” is less severe. 2. Pictogram Convey health, physical and environmental hazard information with red diamond pictograms. 3. Product Name 4. Hazard Statements Phrases that describe the nature of hazardous products and oftentimes the degree of hazard. 5. Precautionary Statements Phrases associated with each hazard statement, that describe general preventative, response, storage or disposal precautions. 6. Manufacturer Information Company name, address & telephone number.
- 6. Printing GHS Labels GHS labels must be printed in black and red for the pictograms diamonds. This is a departure from previous requirements as the symbols were printed in black, and the DOT diamonds could be pre-printed on the labels. Pre-printed labels • have all the GHS label elements including the pictograms pre- printed on the label. Shell Labels • part of the label elements are pre-printed such as supplier identification, empty red-diamonds, and possibly colored logo. Blank Labels • Blank – All information included logo and pictograms are printed on demand.
- 7. Issues printing GHS Labels Pre-printed labels • Each chemical would need its own pre-printed label. A small manufacturing plant that produces 30 products in drums and gallons, you will now need at least 60 pre-printed labels. Shell Labels • Since each chemical has its own pictogram or pictograms, this method leads to accumulation of label-stock that has to be maintained. Blank Labels • Labels must be printed using color printers.
