Drupal is a free and open source content management system (CMS) written in PHP. It was first released in 2001 and allows users to build modular websites and applications. Major organizations and companies that use Drupal include the Obama administration, Virgin Radio, Nokia, Symantec and Sony BMG. Acquia was founded in 2007 as a commercial support company for Drupal services and hosting. Popular Drupal modules include the Content Construction Kit (CCK) for custom fields and Views for building lists and queries. Drupal 7 is scheduled for release in 2009 with many improvements to usability, modules, and the database layer.
