Dry Ice Labs 10.21
The International School of Monterey

Dry ice fast facts
Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide.
The temperature of dry ice is −109.3 °F (−78.5 °C), colder than water ice.
It is dangerous to handle because of its very cold temperature; it can cause frostbite.
Dry ice is made by pressurizing carbon dioxide gas, then cooling it.
Dry ice goes directly from the solid state to a gaseous state (called sublimation).

INVESTIGATION 1: Bubbles in fish tank with dry ice (demonstration)
= What did we do?

= What did you observe?

= Why did it happen?

*
INVESTIGATION 2: Dry ice in apple juice.
DIRECTIONS:
Pour apple juice into a paper cup. Take a sip of the juice.
Add several pieces of dry ice.
Let it sit for 10 minutes, then sip the apple juice.
Predict what you think is going to happen.

*

*

*

*

= AFTER 10 MINUTES, what do you observe?

= How do you explain the change? How did it happen?

*
INVESTIGATION 3: Dry ice in a balloon
DIRECTIONS:
Add dry ice to the inside of a balloon.
Tie the balloon closed
Predict what you think is going to happen.
= Describe your observations.

= How do you explain the change? What’s going on?

*
INVESTIGATION 4: Dry ice in a film canister
DIRECTIONS:
Place dry ice into a plaster film canister.
Seal the lid.
Set aside.
Predict what you think will happen.

*

*

*

*

= What happened?

= How do you explain it?

*
INVESTIGATION 5: Dry ice in hot water
DIRECTIONS:
Place some dry ice into a large beaker.
Add 100 ml of hot water.
= Describe your observations.

= How do you explain the change? What’s going on?
= How does this lab demonstrate that carbon dioxide is denser (heavier) than air?

*
*
INVESTIGATION 6: Dry ice in a beaker with hot water and soap.
DIRECTIONS:
Pour out the water and dry ice from Lab 5.
Place some dry ice into the beaker.
Add 100 ml of hot water.
Use the plastic pipette to add 5-10 drop of liquid soap.

*

= Describe your observations.

*

INVESTIGATION 7: The GIANT bubble (demonstration)

MEDIA:
Killer fog at Lake Nylos, Cameroon, AFRICA
National Geographic, Killer Lakes
