ARPANET
ARPANet  began in 1957 Advanced Research Projects Agency Purpose:  to provide communication signals in the event of a world catastrophe Independent of each other
 
1969:  And here at home
1971:  email Invented by Ray Tomlinson Across the oceans in 1973 Goes to London w/ Queen sent her 1st email in 1976
1980:  Enquire Dr. Tim Berners-Lee  personal memory substitute program Fill a document with words that when clicked could lead ( or link ) to other documents for  further explanation   Hypertext was to the Internet … what  Guttenberg’s movable type was to the book
Memory –  is  space where information is stored MemoryStick… Flashdrive… ScanDisk…

Cyberspace A Synonym for  Internet,  That domain which exists within computer network systems.  1st coined as a Science-Fiction term in 1984
1993:  Mosaic Developed at the University of Illinois Allows for point-and-click Internet navigation  (mouse)
1993 also saw White House opens its web page
Terms Browser can display web pages provides hyper links  to other pages Programs like Safari Netscape Navigator Microsoft Internet  Explorer
1994:  Commerce Arrives on the Internet First flower shop begins taking orders First mass e-mailings sent by advertisers Can order Pizza from the Hut on-line
Search Tools Webcrawler.com (index) 1994 Metasearch.com  searches many engines 1995  Yahoo.com (directory)  1994 Google.com  1996 Baidu.com – Chinese  2000
google.com – most popular search engine  They need their own list of – Database web sites

Search Tools:  Directories Built by humans List of Web pages by subjects or topics Higher accuracy but fewer hits Good identifying general information i.e.. Yahoo Directory…Google Directory
Internet Ethics…. AUP policy All Users Must Agree to an  Acceptable Use Policy A set of rules governing the fair use of the web.  The student usually signs at the bottom and is expected to abide by the terms of use. It covers what the users are allowed to do or not do while using the web. i.e. Not  to plagiarize, or go to unauthorized sites….
Over 2/3rds of our students access the web at home.
Net Jargon Podcast  –  short for i Pod  & broad cast A collection of Mp3 files used for playback on an iPod or PC  Mp3 – radio file  i.e.  Education Podcast Network RSS  -   Really Simple Syndication A format that enables the user to stay informed of updates i.e. blogs and podcasts from their favorite web site without spam and without requesting it.  It is used by teachers who want to keep track of the latest findings on professional educator’s sites  i.e. Bernie Dodge or Dave Warlick’s 2 Cents Worth site

Net Jargon  i.e.  Techterms.com Cookie –  bits if information that the particular web site you’re on sends to your browser.   i.e. remembering certain words or pages you visit often Bookmark  (safari) &  Favorites  (explorer)  -  A place that acts as a marker for a website. You can refer back anytime by clicking on the Bookmark menu at the top of the page
Net Jargon Virus-  A computer program that automatically copies itself thereby “infecting” other programs without the user knowing it. Worm –   A computer virus that tunnels through your computer’s memory & hard drive
New Terms Blog  – short for we b   log A website where users leave comments in an interactive format about a particular subject. Wiki  – software  that allows users to create edit and link web pages easily for special groups to use.  These websites are called wikis  i.e.. Wikipedia (online encyclopedia)
With more LCD projectors available in each department, more teachers are now using the web to enhance their lessons and show student made multimedia projects!
By 2010 information is predicted to Double Every 3 days
