iMOD International User Day
Summary, closing remarks
& planned releases
Delft Software Days 2017
October 31st 2017
Method:
• Share with you some personal observations
as an attempt to summarize today
• Warning, I am not claiming:
• to be complete
• nor hitting exactly the aimed point of the presenter
Closing remarks
• You need a lot of groundwater to fracturing possible
• Groundwater modelling here has the purpose to assess where
demand in the future will occur.
• The concept of consequences sets
• An iMOD – Delft-FEWS is used to estimate Supply Capacity
Kevin Parks, “Shale-Gas Revolution”
Determining groundwater depletion:
• Volume- versus flux-based methods
• Decreasing global data availability versus decreasing accuracy
Problem:
• When pumping starts, not everything comes out of storage
Marc Bierkens: “Global Groundwater Modelling”
• Challenges: ‘poldering’, financing and maintenance & support
• iMOD is already part of the toolbox National Hydrological Instrument
Daan Dunsbergen: “Netherlands Hydrological Instrument”
• Aquifer recovery
as a result of leakage in the drinking water system
Stefania Valenzuela Velazquez: “Xochimilco”
• iMOD, RIBASIM and WFlow
are coupled through Delft-FEWS as a workflow manager
Frans Roelofsen: “Delft-FEWS, RIBASIM & iMOD in India”
• Modelling groundwater yielded the insight that a much stronger
ambition was possible: “Keep the contiminations within the
boundaries of the Port of Rotterdam”
Jan-Willem Meertens: “Port of Rotterdam”
• We should do much more with isotopes
• Impressive 3D geo-model
Cinthya Gómez Castro: GW-isotopes, San José, Costa Rica
• “Credibility is really important,
disseminating our geological models can contributes to that.”
Kevin Parks: “iMOD to dissimenation geological AGS models”
• ‘Probabilistic voxel modelling’ yields ensembles of geo-models
as a successor of atlas with ‘hardcopy cross-sections’
Peter Vermeulen: “Geomodelling in iMOD using Voxels”
• Immediately putting the new 3D Voxel modelling to the limit
Marc Hijma: “integrating data types in local scale geo-model”
• Parameterizing 3D faults is complex but doable with iMOD
Koen van der Hauw: “Enhanced Horizontal Flow Barrier”
• Interactively zoom in in composed waterbalance timeseries.
Hendrik Kok: “new waterbalance tool”
• Overall speed up strongly depends on hardware
• Invest in load-balancing
Jarno Verkaik: “High Performance Computing”
MetaSWAP is also coupled with:
• TRANSOL for salinity transport
• WOFOST for crop growth
Paul van Walsum: “Recent MetaSWAP-developments”
• Salt water intrusion is a land subsidence issue
Gualbert Oude Essink: “iMOD-SEAWAT-MT3D developments”
Planned project-triggered releases:
• November / December 2017: iMOD 4.2
• The extended waterbalance tool
• February 2018: iMOD 4.3
• Voxel modelling
• Fence diagrams
• Deviated wells
• 201x?: iMOD 4.x
• the SUB-CR package
(depending on synchronisation with USGS)
Planned releases
We are still considering to switch to:
• 1 or 2 iMOD-releases per year on fixed dates e.g. March 1st and
September 1st
• Independent from project-ignited releases
We are also considering to add another Service Package that
includes monthly or bi-monthly beta-releases.
