Getting to know Groups What are GROUPS? My developerWorks groups are a community application perfect for facilitating conversations among people who share a common interest, expertise or goal. Groups ENGAGE users… A group provides the means for users to connect with others, develop skills and exchange ideas. It offers the tools that users need to grow their networks, solve problems, and collaborate with others. Groups offer the following TOOLS… \\ Organize and manage relevant information with BOOKMARKS & FEEDS Send announcements via MESSAGES to other group members. Discuss important topics and find solutions to shared problems with the group’s MESSAGE BOARD. Extend the reach of your group with a group BLOG to post the latest group needs, an ACTIVITY to record progress towards a common goal or a WIKI to spur collaboration Upload documents, demos and more via FILES Group owners can, INVITE others to join, CUSTOMIZE the layout, plus, manage the membership and content via ADMIN tools.
Group Access Levels This group is not accessed via search, or other group listings. Therefore, it is only recommended for groups that are sharing confidential content or have a business critical need for a gated community. Private : Hidden and restricted to a particular set of users. A moderated group offers read-only access, where owners can moderate who is able to join. Content is public, yet only members can contribute or post to the message board. Group access could be limited to align with a privileged offering. However, this group offers a higher barrier to entry and users may be discouraged to engage. Moderated : Publicly available; users must request to join. A public group has a low barrier to entry, encouraging participation. Public groups are a great marketing and communication vehicle to the external IT professional audience. Open : Publicly available and anyone can join and contribute Description Option
The value of My developerWorks groups Reach a worldwide audience of over 8 million IT professionals Groups are a great marketing tool, offering an unfiltered view of what other users are saying. Studies show, users are more apt to listen to others to make purchasing decisions then corporate collateral. Take advantage of the options - If going big isn’t your plan… keep it small and focused Groups are just as good as a vehicle to gain feedback, solve problems and encourage discussion around products, solutions and more. Own the conversation… if you don’t, someone else will There is no guarantee that everything that is posted in your message board will be favorable to your offering. But its far better that you own the conversation, be quick to respond, and resolve any concerns, because that conversation will happen somewhere, if not here. Be a part of one of the most comprehensive community and technical support ecosystems It’s not just about groups, users can find your public wikis, blogs, members, files and activities across other facets of My developerWorks. Plus, your group’s public activity is available in real-time in My home, perfect for tracking!
