Community support and collaboration Events Open Source Day Kindles Forums Listserves LinkedIn Facebook www.oscelot.org projects.oscelot.org Why Open Source
Recognition and communication with partner institutions Collaborative development reduces/supplements required tools or FTE May be more likely to get internal funding if you can show you are getting matching or in-kind contributions from other institutions Corporate partners like Learning Objects and Blackboard Why Open Source
Four Principles: Peer Working Sharing Acting Globally Being Open Collaborative Open Source Software Best examples are the Apache and Linux communities Works best when: Object is information or culture – low cost of participation and ease of access Tasks can be chunked into independent pieces The cost of integration (incl. leadership & QC) is low OSCELOT provides services which enable this model!
Benefits for .edu Harness external talent Keep up with the users Boost demand for complementary offerings Reduces costs Shifts the locus of competition Takes the friction out of collaboration Developing social capital Collaborative Open Source Software
