Outline
 Forms of Communication
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 2
Forms of Communication
 Communication is a systematic exchange of information between two or more
people.
 Communication is absolutely necessary when building relationships, sharing
ideas, delegating responsibilities, managing a team and much more.
 Basically there are two forms of communication:
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 3
Verbal Communication
 Verbal communication is the use of language to transfer information through
speaking or sign language.
 It is one of the most common types, often used during presentations, video
conferences and phone calls, meetings and one-on-one conversations.
 Verbal communication is important because it is efficient.
 It can be helpful to support verbal communication with both nonverbal and
written communication.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 4
Continue…
 Verbal communication can be of two types:
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 5
Oral communication
 Oral communication: Oral communication is the process of verbally
transmitting information and ideas from one individual or group to another
 If we communicate through spoken words, it is oral communication. It
includes meetings, conversation, conference, interviews, speech, etc.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 6
Written Communication
 A 'Written Communication' means the sending of messages, orders or
instructions in writing through letters, circulars, manuals, reports, telegrams,
office memos, bulletins, etc.
 It is a formal method of communication and is less flexible.
 A written document preserved properly becomes a permanent record for
future reference.
 It can also be used as legal evidence. It is time-consuming, costly and
unsuitable for confidential and emergent communication.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 7
Non-verbal Communication
 Nonverbal communication is the use of body language, gestures and facial
expressions to convey information to others.
 Nonverbal communication is helpful when trying to understand others’
thoughts and feelings.
 It can be used both intentionally and unintentionally. For example, you might
smile unintentionally when you hear a pleasing or enjoyable idea or piece of
information.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 8
Kinesics
 The study of the way in which
certain body movements and
gestures serve as a form of
non-verbal communication.
 The study of body movements,
gestures, facial expressions,
etc., as a means of
communication.
 Kinesics is the term in which
the body communicates
without words.
 Kinesics include the following
features: personal appearance,
posture, gesture, facial
expression and eye contact.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 9
Personal Appearance
 Personal appearance is the way you look when you step out of your home.
 Specifically in the speaking and presentation area, personal appearance
refers to the way the audiences with their expectations of appropriateness,
see and evaluate the way you look.
 The ways you look is all about your outward appearance of clothing,
grooming, and make-ups.
 Physical appearance on the other hand, involves your body language in
totality: your head movement, feet movements, hand movements, legs
shaking, postures, gestures, gait, stance, facial features, and all other
physical elements of your personality.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 10
Example of personal appearance
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 11
Posture
 Posture can provide a significant amount of important information
through nonverbal communication.
 The way someone holds and positions their body.
 Posture is part of any relationship, regardless of your degree of awareness.
Whether you lean forward/backward, stand or sit erectly, you tell another
person something.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 12
Gesture
 A movement of part of the
body, especially a hand or the
head, to express an idea or
meaning.
 A skilful gesture can increase
the impact of our speech. Our
gesture disclose our ideas.
 A person should avoid
irritating gestures.
 Some example of gestures are
waving hand, upraised hands,
pointing index finger, wagging
index finger, etc.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 13
Example of Gesture
Here, images shows different
gestures.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 14
Facial expression
 A facial expression is one or more motions or positions of the muscles
beneath the skin of the face.
 According to one set of controversial theories, these movements convey the
emotional state of an individual to observers.
 Facial expressions are a form of nonverbal communication.
 They are a primary means of conveying social information between humans,
but they also occur in most other mammals and some other animal species.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 15
Example of facial expression
Different emoji shows different
expression.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 16
Eye Contact
 The eyes are considered to be the windows of the soul. You look to the eyes
of a speaker to help find out the truthfulness of his speech, his intelligence,
attitudes, and feelings.
 Eye contact is a direct and powerful form of non-verbal Communication.
 In human beings, eye contact is a form of nonverbal communication and is
thought to have a large influence on social behavior.
 Eye contact and facial expressions provide important social and emotional
information.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 17
Example of eye contact
Here, images shows eye
contact with each other.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 18
Proxemics
 Do you feel uncomfortable when someone stands too close to you?
 Do bright colours in a room make you feel distracted?
 This types of questions are very important for the study of proxemics.
 Proxemics is the study of human use of space and the effects that population
density has on behavior, communication, and social interaction.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 19
Continue…
 Basically proxemics is the study of space and how we use it, how it makes us
feel more or less comfortable, and how we arrange objects and ourselves in
relation to space.
 There are four kinds of distances that people generally use in communication.
 Public Space: public space is
the space that characterized
how close we sit or stand to
someone.
 Like a public speaker for
example, if you are at an
event, listening to a professor
giving lecture you are
probably about 12-25 feet
away which is best example of
public space.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 20
Continue…
 Social Space: Social space means we are getting a little closer, about 4-12
feet away.
 This kind of space you are probably in if you are talking to a colleague or a
customer at work.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 21
Continue…
 Personal Space: personal space is even closer. In this case, you are probably
about 1-4 feet away from someone.
 This is reserved for talking to friends or family members.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 22
Continue…
 Intimate Space: intimate space is for people who you are very close to. In
this case, you are probably less than a foot away and you might even be
touching each other.
 This is the space you are in with your life partner.
MGITER/CE/TANVI PATEL 23
Thank You
