This document summarizes an experimental study on the effect of process parameters on surface roughness in wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) of die steel D3. The parameters studied were pulse-on time, gap voltage, and wire feed rate. Using an L27 orthogonal array and Taguchi method, experiments were conducted and the surface roughness was measured. Analysis of variance showed that pulse-on time was the most significant factor affecting surface roughness. An artificial neural network was developed to model the relationship between the process parameters and surface roughness. Training data from 23 of the experiments was used to train the neural network model.
