EARTH SCIENCE REGENTS EXAM TUESDAY, JUNE 2OTH MORNING SESSION
REGENTS EXAM STRATEGY Don’t rush through the exam just to get it done. An extra few minutes may save you a whole lot of time later on. Skip and come back to problems you can’t answer easily. Sometimes another question will contain information to other questions. Be sure to leave no blanks. One blank answer could spell disaster !
What to Bring. What not to Bring. Bring 2 sharpened pencils. 2 blue or black pens. A functional calculator. Don’t Bring A pager or a cell phone. A hat or any other distracting items.
Exam Setup Part A and B-1 are multiple choice questions. Part B-2 is a constructed response section. Part C is an extended response section that usually includes a reading passage with questions.
Part A. B-1 Multiple Choice Section Take your time and read the entire question and all the choices. Check your reference tables to see if there is any information that helps. Try to get rid of unlikely answers. Go through all choices a second time to choose the best one. Tips for answering multiple choice questions
Part B-2. C Constructed Response Graphs and diagrams should be done in pencil. If there is a reading passage, read the whole passage first and then re-read it after you look at the questions. Read and follow every direction given ! Tips for answering constructed response questions
At The Close of the Exam Make sure that all answers are in ink except graphs, diagrams. If you have machine scored Part A, B-1; that can be in pencil. Make sure you leave no blank answers. Make sure you sign the declaration at the bottom of Part A, B-1 answer sheet.
Performance Test - Part D Station 1 - Identification - Using a mineral Identification kit and key, the student will determine the characteristics of two mineral samples and identify each sample by name.
Performance Test - Part D Station 2 - Classification - Using rock identification charts, the student will classify two rock samples to identify each sample as Igneous, Metamorphic, or Sedimentary and state a reason for each classification based on the observed characteristics of the rock samples.
Performance Test - Part D Station 3 - Angular Measurement - Using a plastic hemisphere that models the apparent path of the sun, an external protractor, a metric ruler, and masking tape, the student will locate the position of the sun at a given time and measure the distance between that position and a fixed point.
Performance Test - Part D Station 4 - Angular Measurement - Using a plastic hemisphere that models the apparent path of the sun, an external protractor, a metric ruler, and masking tape, the student will locate the position of the sun at a given time and measure the distance between that position and a fixed point.
Performance Test - Part D Station 4 - Mass-Density - Using a balance, a mineral density chart, and a calculator, the student will find the density, determine the mass, and calculate the volume of a given mineral sample. Equation to KNOW: Volume = Mass / Density
Performance Test - Part D Station 5 - Settling Time - Using a column of fluid, three sizes of plastic particles of the same density, a stopwatch, and a calculator, the student will determine the average settling time for each of the three sizes of particles. Know how to use your stopwatch!!!
Performance Test - Part D Station 6 - Graphing - Using data obtained from station 5, the student will construct a line graph of average settling time vs. particle diameter. Then the student will determine the settling time for another given particle diameter using their graph.
