- Earthworms like the Pheretima species live in burrows in moist soil and only come out at night or during rain.
- They feed on soil and pass waste that increases soil fertility. Their burrowing also loosens and aerates the soil.
- The body is elongated, cylindrical, brown dorsally and lighter ventrally, measuring around 20cm long. It is divided into similar segments that correspond to internal segmentation.
- The head region consists of the peristomium segment bearing the mouth and the prostomium lobe anterior to it. The anus is located on the last segment.
