Difficult Technological Transitions in the History of Education
The Middle Ages: Scroll to book
1815: Slate to Paper "Students today depend upon paper too much.  They don't know how to write on slate without getting chalk dust all over themselves.  They can't clean a slate properly.   What will they do when they run out of paper?" (Principal's Association)
1999: Books to Internet "The Internet is not a great tool for teaching . . . People think that children can think of any topic and pull up a wealth of information on it, but that is not the case.  The information in the library is what people seem to expect, but nobody has the time to transcribe entire libraries onto computers.  There is nothing on the Internet that is incredibly beneficial to education."   (Michael Mowe in the Montgomery County Herald)
Recent Uses of Tech across Subject Areas at MHS Photo Documentaries Video Editing Interviews via Skype Website creation (using Weebly) SMART Board instruction Stop-action animation videos
Future potential for these?
"We are not going to let iPods and BlackBerrys and cell phones and things that are disruptive into our classroom.  Classrooms are for learning." -- Mayor Bloomberg              2009
Cell Phones in Class? 90% of secondary students have a cell phone (Kolb Cell Phones) Accessible technology for students Available for immediate use in classroom Phone capabilities/mobile technology expanding rapidly
In a recent study: Students were most successful in classes that combined the following methods: Small group discussion Routine formative and summative assessments using remote devices for immediate feedback Short lectures/discussions geared to areas of weakness as demonstrated in assessments ( Detroit News, May 5/12/2011 )
