EDITING TECHNIQUES IN
OPENING SEQUENCE:
JACK REACHER
Ellie Trayling
Jack Reacher: Opening scene
• The first editing technique used is a parallel shot between
the car driving and a man fiddling with gun/bullets which is
contrasting the villain and hero.
• A jump cut is also used to introduce one of the two main
characters of the film. It uses this as a way of skipping
time building suspense into what he looks like and what
he’s doing.
• An action match is used towards the end of the opening
scene when the individual is reloading the gun, this shows
continuity of the sequence and shows us different camera
shots of the main character to make him look like
someone important.
• There is a cut shot used when the sniper is shooting the
people so it cuts back and forth from the sniper and the
people being shot.
• There is a J-cut when the van parks and knocks over the
cone and there is a smash cut when the sniper is about to
shoot the victims, from loud to silent to create anticipation
so the audience is startled when the fired shot is fired. I
think the theory to the opening scene is binary opposites
as it is clear that it’s good vs bad.
