Looking at…Learning Styles and
          Technology

Visual and aural learners
• Visual learners learn best from what they can see and read. Colorful
illustrations and pictures as well as diagrams and graphic organizers can help
    them to find meaning visually.(Gregory&Chapman)
• Technology can be of help to these learners with videos and charts and tools
such as power points to help them to see the information and retain that
information. They could also use reading programs that use visual clues such
    as color coding. (Shelly, Gunter&Gunter)
• Aural learners…aka auditory learners easily absorb materials that are spoken
and heard. Listening to lectures, stories and even songs are great ways for
them to receive information. They also enjoy talking about their learning with
others and will prefer oral questioning versus reading materials.
• Technology gives access to grat illustrations as well as music and videos for
listening and viewing. A teacher could easily go to youtube and find a video
over a topic that also includes music. Also, they could go beyond discussing
their learning witht heir class with the use of www.edmodo.com or even
    skype.
• There are also so many great interactive texts and apps available for Ipads that
would present information both visually and orally.
Verbal and physical learners
• The verbal (linguistic) learners do best with reading, writing and speaking to
communicate and gather information. Words games, trivia games and practicing
explaining ideas are good ways to present information to them.
• Technology could be used to find reading materials as well as sites like aaaspell.com
that use word and trivia games to present information. Also, they could create word
documents or power points or even charts or other videos and projects to practice
explaining information. Also, they could utilize programs that require them to read and
answer questions. (Shelly, Gunter & Gunter)
• Verbal learners excel with online learning in that they can both see and read the
information in the course context. They would also benefit from sties such as
ed.voicethread.com where they would be able to record their own voices and videos
and other audio to share their information.
• Physical or bodily learners do best when they are physically involved in their learning
and can move about the classroom. Role-playing as well as creating gestures to
symbolize information help as well as activities such as labs where they can manipulate
materials to gather information and also move about the room.
• Technology could be used in labs and to view videos to show them illustrations that
they could demonstrate for the class.
Logical learners
• Logical learners are also known as logical/mathematical learners. They use
logic and reasoning to solve problems.
• Logical learners do well with puzzles, debates, graphs and charts and
other information that they can organize and logically understand and use
reason to explain. Mathematics and science offer great opportunities for
such things though other subjects can as well.
• There are many options on the web for logical learners. With sites such as
emeraldisland.com where they can engage in virtual experiments and
problem solving to mathplayground.com where they can practice math
skills and engage in logic games.
• Logical learners can also use programs such as Microsoft Excel to create
charts and organize their information for presentation.
Social and Solitary learners
• Social learners do well working with others/interpersonally. Group work,
partner activities, teaching the group what they have learned, conferencing
and peer editing are great ways to teach social learners.
• Social learners could benefit from the school social networking site
www.edmodo.com as well as apps that the group could utilize. Also, group
projects or labs that could be done virtually or researched on the internet.
• Sites such as secretbuilders.com allow social learners the chance to ‘interact’
    with historical figures.
• Solitary learners are able to be self reflective and work well independently or
    intrapersonally.
• Having these learners reflect on their lessons and make goals for improvement
as well as logs and journals and positive affirmations help to teach the solitary
    learners.
• These students benefit from metacognition and a site such as eyeplorer.com
allows them to research a topic, take notes and reflect on their learning all in
    one place.
Technology Integration
• Technology finds its way into the classroom daily with the use of smart
boards, the internet and even the phones that students are carrying with
them everywhere they go. They may even be carrying other technological
tools such as laptops, I-pods and I-pads. These items may also be used in
  classrooms for practical reasons.
• We are dealing with the digital generation in most schools where most
students have always at least been aware of technology and most have
some basic computer use skills at least. Using the technology that they are
familiar with can provide new reasons to be interested and excited about
  lessons and learning.
• There are so many tools available through hardware and software that
schools should not ignore them and should use them to enhance learning.
This means taking the technology and putting it in the hands of our
students and teachers and letting them decide how to best use it. It helps
to differentiate learning and can be a great asset to all types of learners.
