Types of Research PRIMARY SECONDARY
PRIMARY Data that YOU COLLECT An original document containing first hand information about a topic.
THINK!! What ways could go about creating PRIMARY research?
SECONDARY Research that someone else has collected An interpretation of information gathered from primary sources.
THINK!! What ways could go about creating SECONDARY research?
Seven steps of research Define the topic A research strategy Locate and retrieve the information Evaluate the information Determine whether there is enough information Organise, record and present Evaluate
Data Quantitative  Data that deals with numbers and anything that is measurable  Qualitative Opinions, facts, statements that must be analysed further to draw conclusions – anything not measurable or numerical.
THINK!! In your groups decide which form of data you would think is more reliable or useful? Justify why.
TASK Explain the terms PRIMARY RESEARCH SECONDARY RESEARCH QUANTITATIVE DATA QUALITATIVE DATA Give examples for each.
Questionnaires The Purpose  gauge opinion/attitude/behaviour The selection –  Who is represented? Types of question – yes/no, open/closed Remember people have varying opinions Keep short! Keep to the point!
Interviews Picking the interviewee- What is their involvement in the subject? Start with factual questions and move on to any more controversial questions later! Avoid leading the interview Timing Structure  More structure = more reliability Less structure = allows you to pursue unexpected directions.
Asking Questions OPEN-ENDED What was your response to … CLOSED Do you agree or disagree that … PROBE Why? Can you give me an example? Will you elaborate for me?
Asking Questions Make questions clear Keep questions short Remember the purpose of your research Avoid biased words or terms Avoid leading questions Do not ask for detailed information Avoid embarrassing questions unless totally necessary!
