Effective Use of 3D Visualization,
Simulation and Training

info@gses.com
Defining the Problem
Worldwide perspective:
• Despite advances in Technology,
Human Performance is still the key
to success and profitability
• Aging/retiring workforce creates potential for
large knowledge gap
• Today’s youth have different expectations
when it comes to learning than past generations

2
What is the Value?
What is the value to your company if we:
1. Reduce Training Time to proficiency by 50%
2. Increase Training Effectiveness from 72%
to 100%
3. Reduce your Training Costs AND
4. Expand the Reach of your Training Programs

Questions & Discussion

4
GSI Activ3Di Team – Strengths
The GSE Activ3Di Team integrates:
• The Systematic Approach to Training (ADDIE) and
• GSE's high-fidelity, first-principles models and
simulations with
• The latest in proven real-time 3D immersive
technologies
...to deliver increased training effectiveness and
knowledge transfer for the energy industry.
5
GSI Activ3Di Team – Strengths
GSE’s unique experience and integrated
solutions set us apart:
• 20 years of experience applying game-based
visualization, simulation and training technologies
in the military, industrial and corporate sectors
• 40 years of experience in providing simulator training
tools such as full-scope simulators (including ANS 3.5
simulators) and operational training simulators
• Experienced staff, many years, nearly all plant types
GSE can extend the value of an operator training simulator
(OTS), from the control room into the engineering spaces…

6
GSI Activ3Di Team – Heritage
This demonstration at
InfoComm ’93 (almost
expanded the use of
stereoscopic 3D by
synchronizing the
visualization across
three 54” screens using
CrystalEyes LCD shutter
glasses.

7
Sweet Spot for
Training Difficult
Unavailability of necessary
equipment or instructional
resources, high cost or
potential danger to personnel
or equipment during training.

8
Sweet Spot for

Physical Tasks
Focused on facilities,
devices or processes –
anything hands-on.

9
Sweet Spot for

Technical Tasks
Complex tasks with
numerous steps, precise
sequences or many
interdependencies.

10
Sweet Spot for
High Cost of Failure
Severe financial, safety or
mission failure consequences if
training is ineffective.

11
Sweet Spot for
Complex Concepts
Complex physical
properties such as
temperature,
chemical, electrical
or magnetic –
features that are
normally invisible to
the human eye.

12
Sweet Spot for

Team-Based Training
Multi-player
applications allow
teams of teams to
interact and respond to
scenarios that reinforce
communication,
collaboration, and
creative problem
solving.

Virtual Flow Loop Trainer

A brick and mortar flow loop:
• costs more than $1,000,000 to install
• costs more than $50,000 a year to operate and maintain

The Virtual Flow Loop Trainer will provide more student
throughput, more flexibility in training, and a more
engaging learning environment at a fraction of the cost.

22
Glass Model – Steam Generators
Making the Invisible Visible
Physical phenomena such as void fraction, temperature, pressure and
flow rate in a generic PWR (pressurized water reactor) are often hard to
visualize, and their relationships to each other even harder to understand.

23
Glass Model – Reactor Core
Making the Invisible Visible
Also integrated with GSE’s generic PWR, this application allows trainees to
experiment via manipulating the nuclear fuel rods, while seeing the impact
in real time, from any point of view, and of any sub-section of the core.

24
Other

Demonstrations…

All of GSE’s 3D applications are available for live
demonstration, including the Virtual Flow Loop Trainer
on the Technology Demonstration of GSE’s upcoming
3Di-TouchWall.
