The EFWO is a partner agency with the United Way of the Greater Dayton Area. Since 1974, the EFWO has worked within our 11-county service area to provide innovative programs and services, free-of-charge, to those facing the many challenges associated with epilepsy. More than 48,000 people within our service area need our help. We work every day to advocate for and empower individuals and families who face the challenges associated with epilepsy. We accomplish this goal by providing clients and caregivers with the tools they need to help manage seizures, regain confidence, adapt to life with epilepsy, and truly thrive. We stand behind our mission, “not another moment lost to seizures,” and are developing local research opportunities that can help improve the lives of those who experience seizures. Exciting and innovative efforts are currently underway to grow our programs and services to include more resources for our community. Through this development process, we will continue offering individualized consultations, seizure first aid training for schools, nurses, and first responders. EPILEPSY FOUNDATION OF WESTERN OHIO ANNUAL DRIVE CAMPAIGN NEWSLETTER 2016 PGE 2 Page | 2 Lighting the Flame of Hope through Creative Expression “I never thought I could express myself so thoroughly!” Ms. Andrea Dial, 29, of Sidney, Ohio Studio E, the EFWO’s Art Therapy program, experienced another fantastic year of sessions. This program is designed to help individuals and families who are living with epilepsy to touch their inner thoughts and feelings through guided art projects. Dozens of people of all ages have joined the sessions and have found a sense of community as well as a creative outlet. Studio E is a partnership between the EFWO and Lundbeck, Inc., and has been hosted at We Care Arts in Kettering, OH. This year we held a spring session in addition to our normal autumn session. Some of the projects completed included: painting images with UV reactive paint, designing day-of-the-dead skulls for Halloween, creating unique necklaces and other trinkets, and creating glazed pottery. Art Therapy can help people break through emotional barriers in a way that other methods can’t. It provides an opportunity for people to uniquely express themselves, connect with others, and build confidence as they build new skills and relationships. Within this program, new friendships have been made, old friendships strengthened, and the pathway to self-discovery has been found by many individuals. One of the participants, Tony Lippolis, has thoroughly embraced the creation of art as an expressive outlet and shared a collection of his beautiful drawings with the other members of the program. Family members have also come out in support of a loved one and had the opportunity to see them in a safe, relaxed, and understanding environment. We are so grateful for the true beauty that this program has brought into each of our lives. CaraBear in the Community The CaraBear Project came to life in January of 2016 when we received our shipment of 2,000 CaraBears! Since then, the CaraBear is living up to its promise to share comfort, smiles, and epilepsy awareness, one hug at a time. In May of 2016, a new project called CaraBear in the Community was launched with the goal of sharing the story behind the CaraBear and promoting epilepsy awareness. CaraBear has since been spotted out and about in the Dayton area, living life to the fullest and meeting as many people as possible! CaraBear has visited Dayton Children’s Hospital, Riverscape Counseling, the Dayton Fire Department, and several other locations throughout the Dayton area! Over the course of 2017, it is our goal for CaraBear to visit schools, hospitals, daycares, community centers, and important landmarks throughout our 11-county service area. Know of any one or of a location that could use the one-of-a-kind smile that only CaraBear can bring? Grab your CaraBear, head to that person or place, take lots of pictures, and send them our way! We will feature your pictures on our social media websites and you can feel proud of spreading epilepsy awareness. Don’t have a CaraBear? We have many exciting plans in the works, such as an open art studio, interactive sensory therapies, and new social support groups and gatherings. We’ve been fortunate enough to expand our programs for our clients and branch our events out into areas previously unvisited within our 11-county service area. This year 294 school nurses and personnel received advanced training on epilepsy first aide as one of our many free programs offered within our service area. Our Mud Volleyball Fundraiser was the largest and most successful it has ever been. And we are excited to announce a new event series within the Flame of Hope program: the GLO series. The Epilepsy Foundation of Western Ohio is proud to have hosted the Studio E art therapy program for its third year. Adding a spring Studio E session provided opportunity for new participants to discover the many benefits of art expression! Participant feedback has been overwhelmingly positive so we plan to offer two sessions again in 2017! Many clients and community members also came to volunteer for our events this year, making what we do possible. We are so thankful for the incredible support that we share with our clients and we are even more grateful to call them our friends. With every interaction, I am deeply touched by the sense of glowing care within our community. We are fortunate enough to have new and returning partners who assist with spreading our message throughout our 11 counties. We have made new connections in several different towns, including Dayton, Springfield, Botkins, Enon, Greenfield, and Troy. Each of these connections strengthens our community, helps to spread hope, and brings promise to what we can develop in the future. Our future is looking brighter than ever before! Exciting plans for growth and expansion are underway. Developments include program expansion, new therapies, and even possible research studies. We look forward to building our future and invite you to join us in whatever way you can. Finally, it must be said how eternally thankful we are to YOU- each person who has supported us throughout the years and those who have just joined the cause of epilepsy awareness. Graciously, Lisa Hanson Executive Director A Furry Helper for Emalyne The journey was long and difficult for all involved, but this June, Emalyne Wolfe, affectionately known as Emma, found her way to a new lifestyle with the promise of improved safety and enhanced companionship. Emma is like any other lively, smiley, “hug- giving” little girl, except the difference between Emma and other children is that Emma suffers from seizures due to Dravet Syndrome—a severe form of epilepsy. In 2014, the EFWO partnered with Emma’s family and friends to help this sweet little girl by generating the funds needed for a service dog. Over the next two years, members of the community stepped up to help raise funds, including Banfield Pet Hospital, who provided a generous donation. And then on a beautiful summer day, the big moment finally arrived. Emma, her family, and the EFWO team gathered in the training room in 4 Paws for Ability to meet the newest member of the Wolfe family, Sif. The introduction was touching and beautiful. Emma, who had waited so long for this day, asked her mom several times, “All mine? This is Emma’s?” and replied to her mom’s affirmations with her charmingly contagious laugh. Emma, her family, and Sif spent the next week in training; there is a lot of work that both the humans and dogs need to go through to ensure a successful life together. At the end of the week that was full of so much hard work, the day came for Sif to go home with her new family. A large graduation celebration was held and everyone who had worked to help this day happen got to come along to witness this unforgettable moment. Since graduation, Emalyne and Sif have spent their days growing closer to each other, gradually getting to know the other better every day. The EFWO would like to thank each and every one of you who helped Emma find the help she needs. We wish Emma and Sif the best of luck in their journey together! Facts on Epilepsy About 65 million people worldwide suffer from epilepsy. Epilepsy is defined as having two (2) or more unprovoked seizures more than twenty-four (24) hours apart from each other. 1 in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. Epilepsy can be developed at any age, but it is most common among young children and older adults. Epilepsy is the 4 th most common neurological disorder among all age groups, but it is the most common neurological disorder in children. 1 in 10 people will have a seizure during their lifetime. Each year, 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with epilepsy. 133,333 will not know the cause. 200 will die because of it.

Igniting the Flame of Hope is paramount at the EFWO. So many people in our own communities face the challenges of seizures and epilepsy, and often do so in silence. We want you all to know that you are not alone and there IS hope! So in order to surround our community in the glow of that flame of hope, we have designed a series of events and projects: the GLO Series. Our kick-off event was our GLO 5K Walk/Run, held on April 15 th , 2016 at Snyder Park in Springfield, Ohio. The festivities began at sundown, and hundreds of people helped to light up the night with glow-in-the-dark accessories, paint, powders, and clothing. Members of our community literally glowed in the darkness and provided a beautiful feeling of togetherness and hope. Our second event in our GLO Series was the 1 st Annual Purple Pumpkin-Palooza and CaraBear Chase 5K, held on October 8, 2016 at Botkins Community Park in Botkins, Ohio. This fall festival was held in memoriam of Cara Meyer and all others who have lost their personal battle with epilepsy. A truly heart-warming environment of family fun and a connected community was highlighted by a moving memorial service at the end of the event. Dozens of people gathered around in a circle and released purple lanterns into the sky, adorned with messages of love, memories, and prayers for lost loved ones. The third GLO event promises to be a truly magical experience: our very first GLO Gala, Spring Transformations, to be held on April 1, 2017. We will be celebrating the light that is found in the glow of the flame of hope by dancing and dining in a magical setting within the Dayton Art Institute. We are fortunate enough to feature John Bramblitt as our featured artist and the evening’s guest speaker. Mr. Bramblitt has epilepsy and, due to complications from his seizures, lost his sight. In spite of his challenges, he creates incredible works of art that bring light into the lives of all who see them. Find out more information at www.ohioepilepsy.org. Teens Speak Up! is a program that provides an opportunity for teens with epilepsy and their parents to visit the nation's capital in Washington DC, receive advocacy training, meet with their legislators, and tell their personal stories. Teens Speak Up! is part of the Public Policy Institute of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. Teens from across the country are nominated by affiliates and selected by the Foundation to participate in the program. This past April, Morgan Tackett of Springfield, OH, was chosen to represent the Epilepsy Foundation of Western Ohio. Morgan attended the conference with her parents, Tracey and Mike Tackett, and brother, Mason. Together with Lisa Hanson, Executive Director of EFWO, they learned about advocacy and met with State Representatives and Senators. Morgan was able to share her personal story of living with epilepsy and advocate for federal epilepsy program funding, improving access to cannabis for research and creating a nationwide system to gather data on neurological conditions and disease. We are very proud of Morgan! What a wonderful representative for Western Ohio! Morgan Tackett Teens Speak Up! Here We GLO! 2016 Fundraising Event Highlights April 15, 2016: GLO Walk at Snyder Park in Springfield, OH Through wind, through rain, through sleet, through snow, through all of the seasons in one day of freak weather, over 300 brave souls came out to experience the first event of its kind in Springfield! This was the inaugural event for our GLO series and we had a blast! The race kicked off with glowing color powder, UV reactive face paint, and plenty of glow sticks! We finished the night with a black light dance party. Special thanks to Tracey Tackett and Sip N’ Dippity for all the work that was put in to make this a truly glowing event! May 15, 2016: Flame of Hope 5K at Eastwood MetroPark in Dayton, OH Everyone’s favorite heroes assembled on a chilly morning in May to honor the every-day heroes in our lives: survivors of epilepsy. Hundreds of our friends came out to light the Flame of Hope with a sense of community and strength. Kohl’s Cares and Chaminade Julienne HS were represented by fantastic volunteers. We even had members of the Dayton Fire Department join us in support of the cause! It was a true inspiration to see our epilepsy heroes cross the finish line and be awarded medals by many of their own favorite heroes. July 17, 2016: Mudapalooza Mud Volleyball at Wegerzyn Gardens in Dayton, OH August 20, 2016: 3rd Annual BigggNastyyy’s Poker Run at the VFW in Ludlow Falls, OH The 3 rd Annual “BigggNastyyy’s Poker Run and Hog Roast” was held in memory of Grant “BigggNastyyy” Fryman and to bring awareness to SUDEP. The Fryman family and their network of support came together to host a truly unforgettable weekend. Cornhole Tournaments took place the evening before the race, with participants camping overnight to start their fun again the next day. Rick Harrison from History Channel’s “Pawn Stars” even filmed a clip in honor of the day and to celebrate the coming together of the community. Thank you to all who put together this one-of a kind event. We can’t wait to see you again next year! October 8, 2016: 1st Annual Purple Pumpkin- Palooza & CaraBear Chase 5K in Botkins, OH What do you get when you combine a family friendly fall festival and a fundraising and awareness building 5K? The Purple Pumpkin-Palooza and CaraBear Chase 5K! For the 1 st annual celebration, in memory of Cara “CaraBear” Meyer, hundreds of community members came out to experience the games, contests, pumpkins, race, and more. The Meyer family and the City of Botkins came together to create a one-of-a- kind event. This second event of the GLO series was beautifully closed in the evening with a performance dedicated to Cara’s memory and the releasing of memorial lanterns. We thank the Meyers, the amazing planning committee, and all those who came out to support this important cause. It was our 26 th year and it was our biggest and muddiest yet! With record attendance came record-breaking fundraising and unprecedented fun! Mudapalooza was once again voted into the top 25 fundraising events in the Miami Valley. We are so grateful to our amazing Mud Committee who always manages to serve up a great time. We are looking forward to 2017 for more fun and mud in the sun!
