Emotional intelligence (EI) involves the ability to recognize and regulate emotions in oneself and others. The concept originated in the late 19th century but was popularized by Daniel Goleman in the 1990s. There are three main models used today: Salovey-Mayer focuses on perceiving, facilitating thought with, understanding, and managing emotions; Bar-On comprises self-awareness and social skills; and Goleman emphasizes personal and social competencies leading to superior workplace performance. EI involves self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management skills.
