- 1. Online Research: How to find quality materials on the internet
- 2. It’s time to begin researching! We will use the online databases to access journal articles We will also learn how to find reliable websites online
- 3. What is a database? There are lots of great magazines and books available for you to use for your reports. The library is not physically big enough to have all of these materials available. Databases can store all that information online – where space is not an issue. We will teach you how to access them!
- 4. Accessing the databases Go to library home page fortworthgov.org/library Under the Search the Catalog section there is a Browse section Click on Reference Databases
- 6. This takes you to a list of organized databases…go to Homework
- 7. Using the database At home: you will need your FWL card to sign in – type in the numbers under the barcode on the back In the library: a login is not required

- 13. Type in keyword or search by clicking on the pictures Works similarly to Searchasaurus Has a different set of materials available

- 15. The internet has a lot of information. How do I know where to find safe and reliable website? Ask a librarian

- 17. 3. Know what makes a website reliable Anyone can get a .com address ( .edu and .gov and .mil should be reliable) Does the website have an author? Is the information credited to a person or organization that can be researched? Is the website current? This does not guarantee a site – but does give good indicators of its authenticity.
- 18. 4. Child friendly search engines are also available Ask your librarian for suggestions!
- 19. There is a lot of information out there! Your friendly children’s librarian is always available to offer suggestions, help provide search strategies and more. We want you to learn and we want to help you!
