Biography of an e-Learner: Mary Learner  Annie Gaskie ELN104
Mary Learner Hi. I’m Mary Learner (Maar-e-Learner).  I am 22 years old, in my senior year at ASU. I can’t believe that I am going to graduate in just a few months! But I have worked hard and have done well … and I am ready to go out into the world.
Educational Experience I am about to take my first online course. Believe it or not, this is my first experience with online learning, even though technology has been part of my educational experience since elementary school.  Sure, I had a few online experiences in high school and most of my teachers here at ASU use Blackboard. But this is the first course I’ve taken that is completely online. I’m a little nervous because I won’t be able to see my professor – or the other students in the class, for that matter – and I’m not sure how that will be. But I have spent a lot of time online – in Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr, and Skype – so how different can this be?!
  Want Instructors to  Use Technology I’m very happy that this course is fully online (even though I am a little nervous) because it shows me that my professor is chill.  I have taken a quick look at the course, and I can see, already, that it is perfect for me: (see next slide)
Course Structure, Teamwork, Non-Linear Learning,  Pictures & Video & Interaction The course has discussion forums, which allow me to say what I really think, without people judging me and laughing at me, and I get to really  think about what I want to say before I post it. It has some structure, so I know what I need to do, when I need to do it, and what is expected of me. I get to work with my homies – my  “virtual” classmates, which is how I like to work, anyway. And I can move through the course however I want to: e.g., Module 1 followed by Module 2 OR vice versa – whatever makes sense for me.  I am really happy to see that there are plenty of images, audio files, video files, and interactive games for me to access – these make it easier for me to really dig in to the material.

  • #2: Write a biography of an eLearner by identifying characteristics from the lesson and explaining how the collaborative nature of social media could help this person to achieve his/her goals.
