WORKING PRINCIPLE OF SYNCHRONOUS GENERATOR
 AC Generators or specifically Alternators operate on the
same fundamental principles of electromagnetic
induction as D.C. GENERATORS which was proposed by
Faraday.
 It means the synchronous generator works on
the principle of Faraday laws of electromagnetic
induction.
 The relative motion between the stationary conductor
and the rotating field(Magnetic field on rotor) induces
the EMF in the stationary conductor. The wave shape of
the induces voltage always a sinusoidal curve.
In synchronous generator
 Armature windings on Stator
 Field windings on Rotor – Which is energized by dc source to
develop rotor magnetic field.
 Rotor is turned by a prime mover, producing a rotating
magnetic field which induce 3 phase voltages in stator
windings
Stationary Conductor
Which is given by:-
Emf(e)=B.l.V volts
B- Instantaneous value of flux
density in tesla
l = length of stator conductor in
meter
V = Speed of conductor in m/sec
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR
 Synchronous motor is a doubly excited machine i.e two
electrical inputs are provided to it.
 It’s stator winding which consists of a 3 phase winding is
provided with three phase supply.
 Rotor winding is provided with DC supply.
 The three phase stator winding carrying three phase
currents produces three phase rotating magnetic flux. The
rotor carrying DC supply also produces a constant flux.
 AC Motors capable of running at a fixed speed irrespective
of the applied load are called SYNCHRONOUS MOTORS.
 It work on the principle the magnetic interaction(Attraction)
of a Rotating Magnetic Field ( stator part ) and
one Constant Magnetic Field ( rotor part ).
 An additional rotation to the rotor is initially given in same
direction of the revolving magnetic field ( rmf ) .
 The opposite poles of rmf and the rotor gets
locked magnetically and the rotor starts rotating with the
same speed of rmf or at Synchronous Speed.
SYNCHRONOUS SPEED( Ns )= (120f)/p
Where,
f = frequency of electricity in Hertz.
p = No. of poles.
