SPACE is the area where the
design takes place
Space
Where will lines, shapes,
images, type be placed?
How will items relate to the
space as a whole?
How will items relate to
each other?
Positive and negative space
Space
Positive space is the filled space
of a visual element.
It is generally the main focus.
Negative space
is the space around the visual
elements, often the background
against which we see shape or
form.
Negative space is referred to as white space
Space
• as important as positive space
• not necessarily white
• used to organize, group,
create hierarchy (importance),
give they eye a visual rest,
direct the eye, etc.
Use white space in typography to make type easier
to read by manipulating margins, kerning, leading.
Space
Space is used to:

create emphasis
increase understanding
balance design elements
provide a visual rest
reduce chaos and/or increase simplicity
Hand in by the end of class
