Supporting ELLs
INTERNAL
SUMMARY:
Teaching the
comprehension
strategies we know is
good for all children
especially English
Language Learners
Supporting ELLs
Read page 168-171.
• What do we need to consider when choosing
text for ELLs?
Supporting ELLs
“If you teach ELLs over time you will find that
you read every book with a particular lens, one
that keeps in mind the vast knowledge you have
developed of your students and of ELLs in
general. You will find that it becomes an
integral part of the way you approach a text.”
Supporting ELL’s
I DO:
• Through Read Alouds (page 172)
YOU DO:
• Through Shared Reading (pages 172-173)
• Through Interactive Writing (pages 173-174)
• Through Guided Reading (pages 174-179)
(pages 179-184)
Through Read Alouds
As I read aloud the text, how am I supporting ELLs?
Supporting ELLs
TRY IT!
Read the YOU DO pages (listed on slide 8) and
complete the following chart.
This will be further explained in the TRY IT
section of the module directions.
Shared Reading Interactive Writing Guided Reading
PART 1:
How does each part of Balanced Literacy support ELL’s. Using your reading,
List at least 4 benefits of each.
PART 2:
Choose one of these elements and plan a lesson for your grade level.
Include your objective, your introduction and your guided practice. Also
include how this lesson will support ELL’s.
Teacher comment:
“My content is so packed that I can’t cover
everything if I allow student talk. Lecture is
the best way to ensure I’m where I need to
be to complete all objectives before the test”.
Additional Ways to Scaffold
English
• Build background knowledge with artifacts, videos, photos, maps,
books, etc.
• Highlight words on word wall and use illustrations.
• Have students work with partners or in small groups.
• Demonstrate how to do projects and provide examples.
• Read aloud to students every day.
• Have students state a fact they have learned at the end of instruction.
• Have students dramatize vocabulary words.
• Use interactive writing to teach writing strategies and skills.
• Make graphic organizers of learning.
• Have students share ideas with a partner before sharing with the class.
English Language Learners
"If the child is not learning the
way you are teaching, then you
must teach in the way the child
learns." - Rita Dunn
