Embedding expected
standards for Learning,
Teaching and Assessment
across UEL using an
ADKAR model
Dr Angela Murphy-Thomas
SFHEA
University of East London
What is the Expected Standards framework?
• The Expected Standards Framework is aimed at enhancing student
learning and promoting innovation in teaching practices across the
university.
• Designed and developed by staff and students at UEL through a
series of workshop.
• Expected standard for learning, teaching and assessment at UEL was
approved through academic board in June 2023
• The framework is intended to describe key expectations for learning,
teaching and assessment practices across the university.
• Promotes an equitable and inclusive academic culture (Merry 2023).
• Promotes transparency for staff and students in learning, teaching
and assessment across the university.
Why do we need this?
• A key part of the Learning and
Teaching Strategy to enhance learning and
teaching provision across UEL (UEL L&T
strategy).
• To ensure that all modules are of a
comparable standard and all teaching staff are
using consistent practice in pedagogy across
their teaching.
• To ensure we meet statutory requirements for
digital accessibility.
• Moving towards embedding quality teaching
across all UEL courses to achieve teaching
excellence.
• To support work to narrow Degree Awarding
gaps, through consistent academic support of
all students.

Editor's Notes

  • #3: CELT has developed Launchpad and Stage 1 of the LTA framework to support all teaching staff in creating learning experiences that are inclusive and engaging for students.
  • #5: There are 10 categories in the framework, . During the development process these categories were determined as key to describing excellence in LTA at UEL. The first 7 are under Development and/or Implementation of, the last 3 categories are related to feedback, research and personal development. These categories will be consistent across all stages of the framework –what changes are the expected standard of activity at each stage. In this current form we have launchpad and stage 1. The message is that we want to create and a nuture a culture of inclusive and authentic learning and teaching. The standards have been reviewed and aligned to the level of experience and responsibility that academics have within UEL.
  • #6: ADKAR provides leaders with suitable strategies and tools and encouraging individuals with valid information, motivation, and the ability to move through changes quickly. People resistance to change Task and finish workshops Socialisation events School SLT rollout Familiarisation with staff through lunchtime seminars and L&T works Liaising with the DEE
  • #11: SMART measures in here.  Self-assessment form designed and developed by CELT to support staff who teach by December 2023  UEL Learning, Teaching and Assessment framework rolled out, with 80% of staff mapped against it by PDR in June 2024  Year-on-year improvement in continuation and progression rates by July 2024   LTA to be fully embedded into Academic 123,321’s development and communication plan and be part of the PDR review in June 2024.   The framework has been integrated into University’s Strategic goal in Education and Experience. Fully embed the expected standards framework across schools, to enhance learning, teaching and assessment practice. Phase 2 of the project will design an expanded framework to support staff to enhance teaching practice and define teaching excellence at UEL.
