This document discusses managing crises and provides an example of how the Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) was used to respond to the grounding of the ship Jody F Millennium in New Zealand in 2002. CIMS is a standardized emergency management structure that uses an incident controller and functional areas of operations, planning, and logistics/administration. The case study describes how CIMS was applied to coordinate the multi-agency response involving over 20 organizations to contain oil spills, remove cargo and fuel, and clean beaches while minimizing risks to public health and the environment. Ultimately, the response was successful in achieving its objectives and limiting environmental impact.
