- 3. Why do we need EMR? Healthcare is a billion dollar industry (Caldeira, et al. 2012). Adults only receive only 50% of recommended preventive care (Shih, et al. 2011). Medication errors Paper records lost or destroyed Emergency Aging global population Chronic diseases
- 4. E-health and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) E-health uses information and communication technology to provide quality healthcare. It can serve in the delivery or enhance of current methods of delivery (Eysenbach, 2001). Electronic Medical Record is a digital record of all information related to the patient to be viewed by authorized personnel (Leonidas, 2009).

Benefits of EMR from Literature Eliminates medication error Process times and waiting time for cues all get shorter Clinical guidelines support and improve outcomes Enhance efficiency, workflow, management and decisions making Also it lowers cost, storage space and staff requirements Decision making and analytics

Challenges to EMR Adoption from Literature Privacy and security concerns High Cost of Enterprise systems Time to plan, develop and implement the system Resistance to change and lack of support by healthcare staff Difficulty with data entry Integration/interoperability of medical devices Consolidating records spread across hospitals
- 7. Research Methodology The research gathered qualitative data with interviews from Healthcare authorities Healthcare administrator Medical device Vendor/implementer of healthcare solutions. Data from the research was validated from literature Analysis, discussion and conclusion were made from the data.

- 11. Conclusion Research was aimed at evaluating the benefits and challenges to the adoption of EMR and proposed solutions. The benefits included improvements in safety, efficiency, response times, management and overall quality of care The challenges were primarily cost, systems integration, data entry and change management and lack of awareness and education. Solutions include government funding, standardization of EMR systems, education, training, better planning and effective change management.
- 12. Limitations and Future Guidelines Limitations include the research being localized to the U.A.E which is has stable power supply and reliable data networks. Hence challenges may differ for third world countries. Proposed area for further research is challenges to the adoption of healthcare mobile applications by consumers.
