Coming into this Internship , I wanted to : • Acquire very relevant hands-on experience, build skill set and improve my knowledge base in Telecommunications • Harness resources presented by the internship in forms of Education, Exposure, Information, and Career advice from MainOne Staff etc. to forge ahead on a well- informed path in the Telecoms industry • Increase confidence in my abilities & add to my resume and references • Contribute Positively to MainOne , in terms of Quality of service in all my required input. - 4. 0rganization Description MainOne offers solutions such as Wholesale Bandwidth to Corporations at Affordable Pricing, Collocation Services (Data Centres) adequately equipped with State –of –the art systems 24-hour Online Network Observation Centre. Amongst Others! MainOne is a leader in the telecom industry in West Africa. Armed with an enormous bandwidth capacity of 1.92TBPS fibre-optic submarine cable, Cable landing Stations in Lagos and Ghana; 4

- 6. Internship in MainOne CP CP – Capital Projects Team , Technical Department of MainOne. In my 8-months stay in MainOne CP , I was actively involved in the deployment of (2) two Colocation rooms. Learning standard Project Management Techniques in the Process such as : 1. Project Initiation 2. Project Planning 3. Project Implementation 4. Project Monitoring/Controlling 5. Project Closure Towards Effective Project Delivery. Aim: To make available rented Space/ Infrastructure that caters for Customer servers, routers, computing hardware(etc.) 6
- 7. The Colo-Room Projects 7 The two (2) projects included: 1. Lekki CLS NOC Relocation Colocation Room Project ( CP/ LCNRC-06-13 ) Implemented at the MainOne CLS between June 2013 and Dec. 2013. The colocation room project involved relocation of NOC Personnel into a 9 X 3 Porta- cabin and retrofitting an existing NOC Room. The Colo-Room Project was designed to fit 18 ( 10+8 racks space ) - (1000mm X 600mm each) factoring walk space and access to the racks.
- 8. The Colo-Room Projects cont’d 2. Monacom NOC Relocation and Co-lo Room Expansion (CP/MNRCE-02-14): Project is still Ongoing. Initiated in Feb 2014, the Colocation room project involves the movement of the Monacom NOC (Saka Tinubu St. VI Lagos) to a new room within the same building and the subsequent expansion of existing Co-location room space. The Co-location room measures approx.. 7.2m x 8m and expansion translates into an additional capacity of 9 more racks of 42U capacity. 8

Internship Activities • Providing daily updates regarding project status, risks and issues between projects and escalate to PM for immediate action. • On-Site Supervision of Various Vendors during each phase of project implementation • Compiling and Archiving all project Documentation (As-Built Drawing, Progress Reports, Issue logs , Job Completion Forms, Purchase Requisitions). • Tracking of Project Expenditure and vendor Payments after completion of Job with Procurement and Finance • Creating a ISO Process flow for my team based on the ISO 9001:2008 standards required for Project Management. 9

Colo-Room Systems • Cooling: Cooling capacities in Colo-rooms is usually determined with respect to the power density i.e. the cooling provisioned must be able to cater adequately when the room is fully populated . The ability to measure and predict power and cooling capability at the rack enclosure level is required to ensure predictable performance and optimize use of the physical infrastructure resource. Problems with power and cooling infrastructure include overheating, overloads, and loss of redundancy etc. When provisioning, we are concerned with : 1. Dimensions of Colocation room?? 2. Numbers of Racks spaces allowed?? 3. Layout for optimal cooling?? (Cold Aisle, Hot Aisle - Cooling Strategies) 4. Cooling System most appropriate? Cost and Time of Delivery?? 10

Colo-Room Systems • Cooling : In the CP/ LCNRC-06-13 Project , (2) M66 Emerson High Precision Air conditioning units were provisioned for cooling to sufficiently control the climate in the room when fully populated with high density customer servers and cater for an N+1 redundancy. Network monitoring functionality and an intuitive user interface: An operator can access the units remotely from a web browser, adjust set-points & other controls and check reports on energy usage. • Power : The Colo-room is powered by Existing CLS High power generators A.C up to 650kV , and inverters about 64KVA for DC back-up Power. There are 2 DBs in the room ( DBs A and B). Each of these DBs are fed by a 70mm cable from the independent power plants A and B in the CLS . Each DB breakers are re-configured with 20A and 32A for high and low density racks respectively. • Fire Detection : Non toxic , Environment friendly gas (FM200) by Du-pont and Very Early Smoke Detection Alarm(VESDA) by Xtralis representing high level Fire suppressant systems. These Very Sensitive Alarms detect fire right from the Incipient Stage. • Bandwidth : Pre-cabled racks ready to support customer business with bandwidth using Fiber optic Cables. • Security : Access is controlled by the room’s biometric system and entry is recorded via a surveillance camera. I was involved in setting up all these systems (Planning/ Implementation etc.) - Learning End- to- End Delivery of a Colo-room. 11

Accomplishments • Successful Completion of the Project • Improved use of my concise writing skills, as well as verbal communications skills in relating with various vendors that worked on the project in every capacity • Doing this, I now understand how each of the systems integrate in the Colo-room development ( Power, Lighting, Fire suppressant systems (Both VESDA and FM200), Cooling (Emerson M66 units), Grounding, Biometric Access control Systems and Surveillance Cameras ) 13
- 14. Lessons Learned During this internship, 1. I have learned to be proactive about a deliverable and get accurate results for a task in the shortest possible timeline 2. I have learned to read e-mails ,keep informed and make constructive reply. 3. I have learned to pay attention to detail and absorb as much information on my project as possible. This has helped me get more knowledgeable on the project as opposed to skimming through documents . 4. I have learnt to prioritize my work available and evaluate dependencies 5. I have improved my skills in intelligently interpreting Engineering design Drawings . 14
- 15. Some Feedback For MainOne My Feedback in making the MainOne internship better are : 1. Inclusion of an internship option on the MainOne website/ an Internal package that orientates the lucky intern on his/ her internship e.g. Behavior in the office, First Day , Structure of MainOne Internship, and a feedback on the intern’s written goals during the internship. 2. An structured approach on appraising the intern depending on the duration of internship 3. Rotation through at least 2 -3 units of MainOne can also be incorporated into the MainOne internship. Keeps the intern focused , busy and maximizing the limited time at his/her disposal 15
- 16. MOVING FORWARD! The MainOne Internship has been great in terms of knowledge available and the hand-on scope of work and it has helped me improve in many ways such as Teamwork, Skill set, Confidence and Exposure. Moving Forward I am better equipped for rigors of analysis of any kind, improved classroom involvement in my academic endeavors and in pursuing a career in Telecommunications. The skills I pulled from this internship is invaluable and I’m indeed thankful for the opportunity. 16
