GENERAL ENGLISH
AIMS AND OBJECTIVE
Aims :-
The overall aims of the course are :
a. to enable the learner to communicate effectively and appropriately in real life
situation:
b. to use English effectively for study purpose across the curriculum;
c. to develop interest in and appreciation of Literature;

d. to develop and integrate the use of the four language skills i.e. Reading,
Listening,
Speaking and Writing;
e. to revise and reinforce structure already learnt. Objective :-
A Receptivitiy
(1) Reading Skills
the ability to read English with
understanding the student is able to:
(i) understand the total content and underlying meaning in the context.
(ii) follow sequence of ideas, facts etc;
(iii) locate Significant points and features;
(iv) identify and understand phrase or sentence groups;
(v) draw inferences;
(vi) predict outcome;
(vii) grasp meaning of words and sentences;
(viii) acquire the ability to use a suitable dictionary;
(ix) understand labels, simple notices and written instructions:
(x) consult sources of information such as time tables, catalogues and brochures,
charts, graphs, advertisements, pictures etc;
(xi) form the habit of reading for pleasure and for information.
(xii) develop correct reading habits, silently, extensively and intensively; (xiii)
comprehend material other than the prescribed text; and (xiv) comment on the
passages read.
(2) Listening Skills
the ability to understand English when it is spoken.
the student should able to :
(i) understand meaning of words, phrases and sentences in context;
(ii) understand statements, questions, instructions, and commands;
(iii) follow directions given orally;
(iv) follow simple narratives and description,
(v) grasp the substance and central idea of what is heard;
(vi) listen and understand radio broadcasts, T.V. Programmes; and (vii) maintain
his/her listening attention for a reasonable length of time.
B Expression :
(1) Speaking Skills
the ability to speak
intelligibly; the Student is able
to:
(i) pronounce English Correctly and intelligibly;
(ii) use appropriate word stress, sentence stress and elementary intonation patterns;

(iii) speak intelligibly while making statements, asking question, giving instructions
and commands, reporting events.
(iv) put ideas in proper sequence;
(v) narrate simple experiences and series of events to convey its essence and

(vi) describe accurately what he/she observes and experiences;
(vii) converse in familiar social situations; and
(viii) use polite expressions in appropriate ways e.g. Excuse me, I beg your pardon etc.
(2) Writing Skills
the ability to write English correctly :
The student is able to:
(i) master the Mechanics of writing; the use of correct punctuation marks and capital
letters;
(ii) spell words correctly;
(iii) write neatly and ligibly with reasonable speed;
(iv) use appropriate vocabulary;
(v) use correct grammatical items;
(vi) write coherently in more than one paragraph;
(vii) complete accurately and fluently semi controlled compositions like stories,
events, processes etc;
(viii) write description of people, places and things and respond imaginatively to
textual questions;
(ix) write pragraphs, letters. (personal and official) simple, narrative pieces, reports,
notices, messages, diary entries etc;
(x) make notes and summarise; (xi) edit written material; (xii) expand notes.
C Attitudanal Change :
Through the course, the student should be able to imbibe ethical, moral,
national and cultural values througn various forms of literature.
D Creative Experession -
During the course, the student should be enabled to write an original, dialogue,
story one-act play, poems etc.

SECTION A : READING 15Marks 27
Periods
A1,A2&A3 Three unseen passages of total 450 words with a variety of questions including 3
marks for vocabulary.
The prose passage will be
Factual passage, e.g. instruction, description, report etc.
Discursive passage e.g. argumentative, interpretative, persuasive etc and Literary
passage, e.g. fiction, poetry, interview, biography etc in nature.
(1)About 150 words in length (5 Marks) (2) About
150 words in length (5 Marks)
(3) About 150 words in length (5 Marks)
There will be questions for local comprehension besides questions on vocabulary and
comprehension of higher level skills such as drawing inferences and conclusions.
2. SECTION 'B' WRITING 20 Marks
36 Periods B1
Letter writing: One letter based on provided verbal stimulus and context.
6 Marks
Types of Letter :- informal: personal - such as to family and friends Formal
: letters of complaints, enquiries, requests, applications.
B2 Note making and summarising : 6 Marks
(3+3)
(a) Students will be asked to make notes on the passage given (100 words).
(b) The students will be asked to prepare a summary looking at the given notes.
B3 Composition : A short writing task based on a verbal and/or visual stimulus
8 Marks
(diagram, picture, graph,map, chart, table, flow chart etc) (80 words)

OR
an essay in about 200 words on topics of day to day life.
After given an ample practice to student to write an original composition for two
or three years, the option of 'Essay' may be eliminated.
3. SECTION 'C' GRAMMAR and TRANSLATION 20 Marks
36 Periods
(15+5)
A variety of short questions involving the use of particular structures within a
context. Test Types used will include cloze, gap-filling, sentence completion,
sentencere-ordering, editing, dialogue- completion and sentence transformation.
The gram mar syllabus for this class will include the following areas for teaching:
1- Use of non-finites
2- Sentence connectives : as, since, while, then, just because, just until
3- Clauses with what, where and how
4- Past Tense
5- Modals : can, could, may, must, might
6- Translation (from Hindi to Eng) 05 marks
Note:- All other areas covered in Class IX will be tested in Class X as this is an integrated
course for this area of learning.
4. SECTION 'D' TEXT BOOKS 45 Marks
81 Periods
Prose 20 Marks
D.1 and D.2 - Two extracts from different prose lessons included in text book
(approximately 100 words each) 5X2 10 marks
These extracts chosen from different lessons will be literary and discursive in nature.
Each extract will be of 5 marks. One mark in each extract will be for vocabulary. 4
marks in each passage will be used for testing local and global comprehension be
sides a question on interpretation.
D.3 One out of two questions: extrapolative in nature based on any one of the prose
lessons from text book to be answered in about 50 to 80 words. 6 Marks
D.4 One out of two questions on drama text (local and global comprehension
questions) (25-30 words) 4 Marks
Poetry 10 Marks
D.5 One out of two extracts from different poems from the prescribed reader, each
followed by two or three questions to test the local and global comprehen sive
of the set text. 3 Marks
D.6 One out of two short answer type questions on interpretation of themes and ideas
contained in the poems to be answered in about 20-25 words each.
