This internship summary describes work on developing real-time facial animation techniques using principal component analysis (PCA) models. 3D facial scans were collected and fitted meshes were used to build PCA identity and expression models. Two expression modeling approaches - raw difference and deformation transfer - were implemented and evaluated. The deformation transfer approach had slightly better accuracy, reconstructing smiles and mouth openings well but struggling with more complex expressions like kissing. Future work could focus on improving modeling of detailed expressions.
