12
Open Educational Resources
OER are teaching, learning, and
research resources that permits their free
use and re-purposing by others.

OpenTextBooks
• Open textbooks are textbooks that have
been funded, published, and licensed to be
freely used, adapted, and distributed.
• These books have been reviewed by faculty
from a variety universities to assess their
quality.
• These books can be downloaded for no

How a MOOC changed his life
• Andersson Contreras
• Student from Colombia who
followed the MOOC Solar Energy
“ After gaining all this knowledge, install my own PV system
using mathematical tools provided for that purpose, and
economic results of the system were very satisfactory. Now, I
have a saving of over 50% of money, a continuous electric fluid
and a contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases to the
atmosphere.”

Arno Smets – Solar Energy Course
• 30% more material than in the classical classroom
• Pass rates up from 71% to 89%
• Grades up from 6.51 to 7.09 (on a scale from 1 to 10)

Editor's Notes

  • #4: Education in Engineering, Science & Design 16 bachelor programmes 35 master programmes (30% international student)
  • #10: CC is a non-profit organization based in the US with more than 80 affiliates around the world. CC develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and innovation.
  • #23: More than 26k certificates have been issued
  • #24: Open education gives access to a world wide audience.
  • #27: But also students who want to study at TU Delft come based on MOOC experience. We did not do a thorough research yet, but we see that our international enrolments have increased from +/- 20% more countries, the quality of applications is better (acceptance rate is higher) and up 25% resp. 40% in 2014 & 2015.
  • #29: Besides access and reach of the MOOCs we also see a huge potential and impact of open and online education on our campus courses. Besides blended learning we now see a potential in other universities MOOCs
  • #30: What do we see other universities do? Different initiatives to bring online education back in formal education programmes for credit. Micromasters MIT (inverted admission), several alliances, Nano degrees, ASU Global freshman year, Charter Oak, ACE alternative credit project and Malaysia becoming the first country to create a platform to award credit recognition and transfer for MOOCs http://micromasters.mit.edu/  only the best students can enter continue application to MIT on campus course. http://gfa.asu.edu/  Arizona state university has students follow first year courses online via MOOCs (Their own MOOCs) https://www.edx.org/charter-oak  charter Oak issues credits for courses offered by Berkeley and MIT (three courses in total) so no credits from the hosting university but from credit oak http://alternativecreditproject.com/  similar to charter oak http://www.nst.com.my/news/2016/01/122766/malaysia-become-first-country-develop-credit-recognition-policy-online-courses  country level developing policy https://kiron.university/  An organizations with a mission to give refugees access to higher accreditated education, via partially online courses. We are talking to them about possibilities to have a improve access to higher education via for example an online linkage programme. However we need more partners (EU, other universities) to realize this big ambition.
  • #31: Currently TU Delft aims at setting up an alliance with several international partners, like the University of Queensland, the University of British Columbia, EPFL, Rice University and Australian National University. Our shared ambition is to recognize and integrate MOOCs in (formal) campus education. This would mean that in the future any student registered at one of the partner universities can take any MOOC offered by these universities and be awarded formal Credits for it. <<Picture alliance airplane >> I believe starting an alliance is a the best way to start since you work based on trust among each other quality. And it’s easier to develop working agreements and easy to handle procedures.
  • #32: Deze moet even inladen voordat hij vloeiend loopt Lessons learned Erasmus +. Why don’t we create a virtual exchange for our online courses and MOOCs, a virtual Erasmus +What should EU do? Facilitate the network to issue credits for MOOCs for example Erasmus + has brought us great experiences, learnings more mobility, improved network between universities, structured exchange of students and staff. This models also works due to clear framework of regulations, trust and necessary incentives.
Use each others MOOCs to enrich education of our campus students and make international transfer of credits more easy
