Chaucer s The Wife of Bath Prologue and John Webster s The Duchess of Malfi. In both stories the
audience is introduced to the idea of female independence and strength through a confident and
skilled female character who envelops the knowledge required to subvert the standards of
patriarchal and misogynistic society. While both women in the The Wifeof Bath Prologue and The
Duchess of Malfi are varied characters who (think they) exude authority and seem to be able to live
outside the limitations of a patriarchal society, at a closer look it is obvious this is not the case.

The elaborate triumph following Trajan s conquering of Dacia took place over the course of two
days. In the early morning, the procession started with musicians leading the way through the porta

In the book, Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger the main character Holden Caulfield is
introduced to the reader first by him attempting an opening to an introduction of himself, but him
being the cynical guy he is doesn t really give the reader that, he opens saying how to reader
probably wants to know about him and his lousy childhood but that he doesn t feel like doing that

This revealed that not only was he really wasn t ready to be mature or grow up or to actually
handle doing anything adult like, assuming he is doing this to try to figure out adulthood like
how he was extremely desperate for any human to talk to and show him how to be an adult.
Then comes along phoebe, his little sister and probably his favorite person. As he watches her
on the carousel at the zoo, he is truly happy even tearing up a little. He is watching pure
innocence, the thing he has been striving not to lose. In this moment you notice a change in
holden, he goes from a cynical, and desperate boy who never wanted anything to change to being
so happy just to see his sister on a carousel. After she gets off she gives him back his hat. The hat
that he used for protection and in that moment he gets what he has wanted through the whole
book, for someone to notice him and comfort him in a way. Though he was shown need and made
efforts to interact with other people he has never gotten anything comforting back. Phoebe finally

almost gets what he has been wanting the whole book, she has and gives him in a sense, the
innocence he feels he is losing rapidly. With phoebe as this necessary moving point he starts on his
way of being heard, without her he wouldn t have even ended up at home and the hospital to write
the story as during the zoo she makes him promise he ll go home making her and even more
