Contagious Disease. In his talk, he discusses the idea that violence is something that can be
passed on from person to person, that being raised in a violent situation or being shown violence

Du Maurier s Rebecca can be seen to be as a Modern Classic Gothic Text in many ways. Gothic
texts often focus on the supernatural, picturesque secluded setting and a hint of violence or
masochism. Rebecca shows these elements, from the lonely mansion of Manderley, to the
flashbacks of the unnamed narrator s life; but mostly the entire story is underscored by the ghost of
Rebecca and her haunting presence in the narrator s life. This is what makes the text truly Gothic.
