- 3. The bearded A&E star admitted he had been kicked out of the hotel he was staying at in New York after being mistaken for a homeless man. "The first thing that happened to me at the hotel was I got escorted out," Robertson said. "I asked where the bathroom was and he said, 'Right this way, sir.' He was very nice, he walked me outside, pointed down the road and said, 'Good luck.'"

- 11. The concept of Ethics • Ethics is deciding what is right or wrong in a reasoned, impartial manner.
- 12. Reasoned • Ethical decisions are based on reason, not emotion. – When you lose your cool or get emotional it is hard to be reasonable.

- 14. Impartiality • Impartiality-the idea that the same ethical standards are applied to everyone. – Does not value one person or group over another. • White over black, men over women, thin over fat, normal over disabled, etc..

Profit Maximization • Ethical or not? – Move factories for lower wages – Use inferior materials which make you more money but are less safe – Change materials or ingredients without notifying customers – Accounting practices to show more money – Taking away retirement packages – Stretching the truth to get a sale

- 19. Why do you follow the rules? • Why can’t we urinate in public? • Why do most people drive above the speed limit? • Why can’t we walk around without clothes? • Why is ok to tell someone that they look good (when that’s not really what you think?) • Why can’t we steal?
- 20. Who would you hire? • A person who makes the right decision because they know if they don’t bad consequences will happen. Or • A person who makes the right decision because it is the right thing to do and doesn’t think about consequences.
- 21. Consequence Based Ethics • We base ethical decisions on consequences. Good or Bad • Majority Rule: If the majority thinks it is bad for society the law says it’s bad. – Created by the people and their elected representatives. – Greatest good for greatest number
- 22. Rule-based Ethics • Acts are either right or wrong. – Judged by Authorities • Law, Church – Society/People • Civil Rights protection – Example: slavery. The majority in the south vs. the right thing to do? • Cigarettes, Marijuana usage • Marriages
- 23. What have you done because it was just the right thing to do? • Volunteered • Returned money that wasn’t yours. • Corrected a wrong even if it hurt you financially. • Stop someone from bullying another.
