Ethnography in the Crowd: The body, sociality and globalization in Seoul By Rob Shields
Overview of the Presentation Introduction; Rob Shields Apkujong-no as liminal site Site as front stage (Goffmann) Moral Panic Questions Conclusion
Rob Shields: Canadian ethnographer. His research interests focus on urban and virtual social spaces. He is a founder and editor of the academic journal Space and Culture.
Apkujong-no Site as liminal zone Strong etiquette: Consumer-based During the day: Fashion Street At night: meeting place - Party place
Irving Goffman (1922-1982) Connection: self awareness in Rodeo Street. Front Stage vs. Backstage. The Presentation of the Self. Dramaturgical Analysis; the study of social interaction in terms of theatrical performance.
Moral Panic; Semi-spontaneous or media-generated mass movement based on the perception that some individual or group, frequently a minority group or a subculture , is dangerously deviant and poses a menace to society. These panics are generally fuelled by, although not always caused by, media coverage of social issues. A widely circulated and new-seeming urban legend is frequently involved. These panics can sometimes lead to mob violence. Rodeo Street is often portrayed as un-Korean by the media and therefore it is criticised and seen as dangerous for local customs.
Question; Comparing Cities: The decentralization of the centre is a common phenomenon. Can you give other examples of places where niches for high-class were created? Would this not lead to a single global culture in the these areas of the ‘world cities’?
Conclusion “ Understood as liminality, globalization does not lead to cultural homogenization, but rather to new local-global and local-local cultural hybrids.” (Shields, 1997)
