School District Information Willamette Valley 155 Square Miles 17,000 Students 26 Elementary  13 Middle  8 High  3 Charter Schools Started in 1854
Eugene SRTS Program History of Bicycle & Pedestrian projects from the ‘70s Current program started at a pilot school as federal funding for SRTS became available A team was formed to bring together City, District, University, & community members Mission: Eugene Safe Routes to School is a community approach to encourage and enable more people to walk and bike to school safely.
District Approach Projects the school district is working on to increase the walkability and bikeability for our students  Encouragement-  Freiker,Walk + Bike Day, Kidical Mass & More ! Education-  BikeEducation & GEARs/BTA Enforcement-  Speed Checks & the Police Engineering-  DesignBridge & the City of Eugene Evaluation-  Surveys, tallies, and reviews
The  Fre quent B iker  Program encourages more biking through encouragement  and rewards. Encouragement :
Walk & Bike Day (and more) Third Wednesday of October 29 Eugene Schools Participated up from 8 two years ago. Spring -  Green Week:  Walk & Roll Day before Earth Day. Summer-  Bike Day & Blackberry Jamboree Every day- walking school buses and bike trains. Encouragement :
Encouragement & Education : A family fun ride!  It’s not critical….  it’s Kidical! We follow the rules of the road, share our secret backroads, have fun, review safety tips, and end with ice cream  (or a healthy treat)! www.kidicalmass.org
Education Education in the classroom & to the parents Certified LCI’s with a model Bike Ed program at our pilot school and an expanding Bike/Ped Ed program
Enforcement Speed readers Officer enforcement Crossing guards
Building better bike parking through student input and community build. Working with students to design and build new facilities. Engineering:
Infrastructure Changes with the City & District Working with school SRTS Committees to build a better active transportation environment throughout the community Walkability & Bikeability Studies and Mapping Engineering: Lack of crosswalk Family School Road Diet and Pedestrian  Improvements- 3 area schools
Evaluation What is working and what should be changed. Policy changes at the District level. Wellness Policy Bike Education Transportation Policy changes that encourage active transportation Resources for Schools: Program manager and SRTS Team assistance. New website with maps, contacts, & local SRTS Toolkit. Challenge- continuation beyond grant funding.
