Gender
Normally a female would be expected to be represented as a
caring, kind, affectionate, submissive character. Often media
texts stereotypically depict females as sexually alluring and
dangerous or fragile and innocent. Initially the female is
portrayed as not posing a threat by her non conventional
clothing for a typical femme fatale. We chose pink clothing to
represent our character as unconventionally wholesome, caring
and affectionate. This portrayal is then proven wrong. We chose
to frame her as centred in between the two males representing
her as controlling them and their actions. She is also dividing
the two males foreshadowing that she will cause conflict
between them later on. However, later on she is shown as
sexually alluring and dangerous.
Later on in our films narrative our femme fatale is involved in a
dalliance with the male protagonist; when she is caught her
dialogue “No its not what you think” however this is what our
character thought representing her as devious and underhand
deceiving her lover. This would position the audience to view
her as a dangerous woman altering their previous view of her
innocence. She is also shown as sexually dominant through the
long shot of her ushering the protagonist into the office. This
represent is atypical of an traditional female showing her
instigating an immoral encounter.
At the end the film the femme fatale is shown to be the
opposite and is shown to be vulnerable through being
threatened by a male, conforming to the stereotypically of
Age
One of our characters was a male in their mid 50s. Typically, the audience may expect this
type of age group to be represented as established in their life goals, with a family, settled
and a considerate, respected member of society. Our character was portrayed as angry and
discontented which was shown by him kicking other alcohol bottles over a frequent
swearing. He is also shown as naive; when the femme fatale enters, we show our audience
through the use of a long shot her obvious suggestive winking at the protagonist that our
older character clearly fails to acknowledge. The dialogue ‘’I’m sick of this, I need a fag’’
which portrays that he is living life from cigarette to cigarette and not living life to its full
potential which is common in film noir as older people are generally shown as discontented
with life and need an escape from what is going on in their day to day lives.
We utilised many mid shots to portray his body language as aggressive, wielding his power
and authority to intimidate the younger more vulnerable protagonist. By putting his leg on
the desk he is marking his territory and its his domain. Representing as a discontented and
showing apathy towards his role.
